Abstract

La1-xNdxP5O14 (LNPP) is one compound in a class of high-gain Nd laser materials1 that shows a small decrease in fluorescence efficiency as Nd3+ concentration is increased to the stoichiometric limit. But the use of LNPP crystal as a laser medium is limited by its poor mechanical property (very easy to cleave). We prepared LNPP glass. This new laser material has many advantages: good mechanical property; good optical homogeneity; high gain; and high laser energy density (>3 J/cm3). The laser output energy may be higher than YAG:Nd3+. The cost is lower than YAG:Nd3+, and it is easy to make LNPP glass in large sizes.
