Bobby Jindal on Abortion

Republican Governor; previously Representative (LA-1)

Planned Parenthood sells babies' body parts

I'm a doer, not a talker. If you want somebody who is going to manage the slow decline of this country, makes incremental changes, vote for somebody else. If you want to vote for somebody who understands what is at stake-- Planned Parenthood is selling baby parts across this country, and the Senate Republicans have already given up, even without a fight. I am angrier at the Republicans in D.C. than I am at the president.

Defund and criminally investigate Planned Parenthood

Q: [Your rival candidate] Carly Fiorina said that she would go so far as to shut down the government over the issue of defunding Planned Parenthood. Would you do that?

JINDAL: Well, Planned Parenthood had better hope that Hillary Clinton wins this election, because I guarantee under President Jindal, January 2017, the Department of Justice and the IRS and everybody else that we can send from the federal government will be going in to Planned Parenthood. This is absolutely disgusting, and revolts the conscience of the nation. Absolutely, we need to defund Planned Parenthood. In my own state, for example, we launched an investigation, asked the FBI to cooperate. We just, earlier this week, kicked them out of Medicaid in Louisiana as well, canceled their provider contract. They don't provide any abortions in Louisiana. I don't think President Obama should send taxpayer dollars to this group that has been caught, I believe, breaking the law, but also offending our values and our ethics.

Abortionists need admitting privileges at nearby hospital

Jindal supports the "Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act," which would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest or life of the mother. In 2014, he signed a law that required all Louisiana physicians who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital at least 30 miles away. The law effectively forced the closure of three of the state's five abortion clinics. Earlier this year, his administration denied Planned Parenthood an operating license in New Orleans. On gay marriage, Jindal wrote a New York Times op-ed saying he would "hold firm" against same-sex unions. He told CNN's "New Day" that should the Supreme Court overturn same-sex marriage bans, Congress and the states should pass a Constitutional Amendment restoring them. In the wake of Indiana's religious liberty bill earlier this year, Jindal passed an executive order allowing businesses to refuse services related to same-sex marriage.

Human life amendment: define "person" from conception

On many science and education issues, Jindal tries to straddle the partisan divide. He favors a human life amendment to define the legal existence of a "person" at the moment of conception, but he is also a strong advocate for the cheap and wide distribution of contraceptives. He refused to criticize his "friend" Phil Robertson, the Duck Dynast who said the other day that a Bible-based monogamous marriage of man and woman is the best way to end diseases like AIDS.

Offering contraception is dangerous federal overreach

Jindal told religious conservatives during the annual Faith and Freedom Coalition conference that the Obama administration has been waging a war on religion and a "hostile takeover" of Washington is imminent. Jindal said, "I am tired of the left. They say they're for tolerance, they say they respect diversity. The reality is this: They respect everybody unless you happen to disagree with them," he said. "The left is trying to silence us and I'm tired of it, I won't take it anymore."

Jindal's comments echoed much of what he said during last week's Iowa Republican convention, where he assailed the administration's Affordable Care Act mandate to offer contraception as "one of the most dangerous overreaches of federal government power."

2003: In first race, admitted to liberals he was pro-life

In my first race in 2003, at one of my first fundraisers, my first question was from a fairly liberal woman who asked me my position on abortion. I told her I was pro-life. I remember thinking I was going to have to return all the money I had raised! But amazingly, she became a financial supporter despite our differences over abortion. It turns out she already knew I was pro-life; she just wanted to see if I would be honest about my position or if I would waffle in order to get her money.

Judeo-Christian heritage fosters culture of life

America's Judeo-Christian heritage commands us to help the help-less and demands that we protect innocent human life. Yes, this is a demand, not an option. America is a place that actively strives to protect its most vulnerable members. Undoubtedly, we as a country have made wrong turns over the years--we tolerated slavery after all.

And regardless of the mindless political debate we so often hear on the issue of abortion--you know the debate, the one that talks about "choice" and "rights" and "freedom" and "legal precedent" and "settled law" and everything under the sun EXCEPT for abortion itself--regardless of that, I do believe the desire to defend and protect human life extends across party and religious boundaries in America. I believe in America's desire and ability to do the right thing.

I’m pro-life

Q: What about things like abortion & same-sex marriages, things like that. These are not places where McCain likes to go. Would you advise him to talk about those things?

A: Well, yes, and they are important to me. I’m pro-life and I certainly support the traditional definition of marriage. McCain is famous for doing these town hall meetings. These questions will come up, and I think he should be honest in addressing them. I think he should talk about the fact he is pro-life.

Voted NO on expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines.

Allows federal funding for research that utilizes human embryonic stem cells, regardless of the date on which the stem cells were derived from a human embryo, provided such embryos:
  1. have been donated from in vitro fertilization clinics;
  2. were created for the purposes of fertility treatment;
  3. were in excess of the needs of the individuals seeking such treatment and would otherwise be discarded; and
  4. were donated by such individuals with written informed consent and without any financial or other inducements.

Proponents support voting YES because:

Since 2 years ago, the last Stem Cell bill, public support has surged for stem cells. Research is proceeding unfettered and, in some cases, without ethical standards in other countries. And even when these countries have ethical standards, our failures are allowing them to gain the scientific edge over the US. Some suggest that it is Congress' role to tell researchers what kinds of cells to use. I suggest we are not the arbiters of research. Instead, we should foster all of these methods, and we should adequately fund and have ethical oversight over all ethical stem cell research.

Opponents support voting NO because:

A good deal has changed in the world of science. Amniotic fluid stem cells are now available to open a broad new area of research. I think the American people would welcome us having a hearing to understand more about this promising new area of science. As it stands today, we will simply have to debate the bill on the merits of information that is well over 2 years old, and I think that is unfortunate.

The recent findings of the pluripotent epithelial cells demonstrates how quickly the world has changed. Wouldn't it be nice to have the researcher before our committee and be able to ask those questions so we may make the best possible judgment for the American people?

Rated 100% by the NRLC, indicating a pro-life stance.

Jindal scores 100% by the NRLC on abortion issues

OnTheIssues.org interprets the 2006 NRLC scores as follows:

About the NRLC (from their website, www.nrlc.org):

The ultimate goal of the National Right to Life Committee is to restore legal protection to innocent human life. The primary interest of the National Right to Life Committee and its members has been the abortion controversy; however, it is also concerned with related matters of medical ethics which relate to the right to life issues of euthanasia and infanticide. The Committee does not have a position on issues such as contraception, sex education, capital punishment, and national defense. The National Right to Life Committee was founded in 1973 in response to the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision, legalizing the practice of human abortion in all 50 states, throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy.

The NRLC has been instrumental in achieving a number of legislative reforms at the national level, including a ban on non-therapeutic experimentation of unborn and newborn babies, a federal conscience clause guaranteeing medical personnel the right to refuse to participate in abortion procedures, and various amendments to appropriations bills which prohibit (or limit) the use of federal funds to subsidize or promote abortions in the United States and overseas.

In addition to maintaining a lobbying presence at the federal level, NRLC serves as a clearinghouse of information for its state affiliates and local chapters, its individual members, the press, and the public.
