The Komtar building in Penang is well-known for its range of activities, with one of the most educational options waiting for you at Penang Tech Dome. Setup as a non-profit organisation, the Tech Dome aims to introduce younger kids to science, help them explore STEM subjects, and learn a little bit more about how the world works.
Where is Tech Dome Penang?
Tech Dome Penang is on Levels 4 and 5 of the Komtar building. The main entrance is on Level 5 where you’ll find the ticket gates. On the same level, near the main entrance, is the ticket office where tickets can be bought for the Tech Dome (and all the other activities in the Komtar building).
Entry fees and opening times
The Tech Dome is open seven days a week, 10am to 7pm.
Tickets cost RM28 for adults, RM16 for children.
There are a few extra activities (climbing wall, drop slide and anti-gravity machine) which need a separate payment (RM6).
What to expect at Tech Dome Penang
Educational activity centres like this can sometimes feel tired and uninspiring, but a visit to Tech Dome is much more than that. In a large, cool hall across two levels, all of the exhibits are well-designed and introduce some new aspect of science to the user. A few of them were under maintenance, but not enough to spoil a visit.
The exhibits are all based around STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) so it’s a good opportunity to combine education and play. With over 120 different exhibits to choose from, kids (and adults) will always be finding something new to play with, whether it’s an air-pressure maze, kinetic energy display, laser maze, VR headsets, climbing walls, vintage arcade games and interactive science experiments.
Ask the staff for details of when the drone show is happening, as this is a fun few minutes. If you need any food or drink, there’s a small café and gift shop to the rear of the hall.
On the whole, it’s a fun space for the kids to wander around and try out new ideas and concepts. If you can, try to arrive soon after it opens as it’ll be quieter then.
How long should you plan to spend here
With so many activities to interact with, the length of visit does of course depend on how involved and interested in each one you are. We would recommend planning to spend about one or two hours at Tech Dome.
Final thoughts on Tech Dome Penang
Tech Dome Penang is a well-thought out and interesting museum, with plenty of activities to keep kids occupied and entertained. If you’ve been to one of these type of museums before, you’ll know what to expect but, with a spacious and modern venue, it’s a recommended visit if you’re in George Town and definitely one to consider if you want to escape the heat or rain, as this is one of the best indoor Penang activities for kids.
