1.7K views · 2.4K reactions | Do you have a quilt ready and waiting for binding? Let's get it finished before the end of the year! Machine binding is a quick and secure way to finish your quilts! Let me show you how to do it! 🪡This is the final part of my 3 part series on how to finish a quilt. See my previous reels for the other parts. This last part that covers binding has been broken into two sections: creating binding and attaching binding. For detailed steps for all the parts, visit my blog! Let's do this! 🙌🏼 On the back of the quilt, line up the binding with the edge of the quilt, raw edges together. Leaving a 10"-12" tail on the end, sew the binding to the quilt. Backstitch when you get 1/4" away from the corner and cut threads. Fold the binding over on itself so it makes a 90° angle and hangs to the right. Finger press that fold and hold it while you then flip the binding from the right to the left. Hold it tight while you turn the quilt and start sewing just inside the edge. Continue to attach the binding to each side in the same way. Go around the quilt, stopping about 12" from where you began. Take your two ends and fold each end back on itself so that there is 1/4" gap in between. On the left side, trim the binding directly on that fold. Open up the piece that you cut off and lay it along the top of your folded back binding on the right and trim. *Be careful not to trim through the lower layer of binding! Open the binding and sew the two ends of binding together on the diagonal. Then stitch down the rest of the binding to the edge of the quilt. Fold your binding to the front and topstitch close to the binding edge. At the corner, stop and fold the new side of the binding up to the front. Slowly stitch it down. Continue in this way all around the quilt. When you reach the starting place, stitch over the beginning few stitches and backstitch. Cut your threads and you are finished! 👉🏼Save this reel for future reference and share with a friend who could use it! 🩷 #quiltingtips #quiltersofinstagram #quilting #finishingaquilt #quiltbinding #howtobindaquilt #quilter #igquiltcommunity #quiltbindingtutorial #astitchisastitchpatterns #astitchisastitch | Delia Birch | A Stitch is a Stitch Quilt Co.

It’s... | By Grace Company | Here's how to get perfect mitered corners on your borders. First, when you sew on your borders, you're going to start a quarter inch in from the corners of your quilt top and to make that easier, you can mark your starting point before you sew it. Take it over to your machine, start a quarter inch in at the top and then sew until you get a quarter inch from the bottom and you can use a ruler to mark it while it's on the machine. Then, sew to that spot that you marked and make sure to back stitch a couple times and repeat that to all sides and remember, do not sew the tops together yet. Then, you are going to fold your corners down and make sure your borders line up. Now, you can take your ruler and mark a perfect 45degree line. Then, sew right on top of that line and repeat that process with all of the corners. Now, trim a quarter inch past that seam and you've got a perfect mitered corner and make sure to follow along for more tips and tricks.

This is how I like to connect these two strips with the diagonal seam. Fold the binding on until you are about to 12 inches away from where you started and then remove the quilt from the machine leaving this gap open here. I like to give myself more like 12 inches because it is a little easier to work with that way. Now we need to connect these two binding strips. I am going to be connecting these also with the diagonal seam so I do this by taking this top strip and folding it back on itself. Kinda fix somewhere in between where the two meet towards the middle and then do the same thing with the bottom strip. You will want the folds to not quite touch so they should be about an eighth to a quarter inch apart. Then I have my iron right here so I go ahead and give it a good press because I'm going to want to see where these press lines are. If you have a hair marker nearby, you can try using that too to press a crease. This is the part I used to struggle with the muscle. Try to go slow here. First, take top strip and go ahead and open it up with the wrong side of the fabric facing down. It shouldn't be twisted a lot or anything and we're going to find where these two points meet or where the two creases meet. There should be like this X shape. So here I just have it facing up. I'm going to grab a pin and then I'm going to open up my bottom strip but I'm going to have the wrong side of the fabric facing up or the right side facing down. Then I take the pin put it right in the spot where these two creases meet. Now, whatever is going on with your quilt on the left does not matter. You can bunch it up as much as you want and then, take the pin and put it also in the other strip where the two points meet. The two strips should be perpendicular and if you lay them down, you'll see that the creases that are going vertically on one strip will match with the horizontal on the other and vice versa. A few important things to note will be that the right sides of the fabric should be facing each other and then the two ends of the strips should be on the right while the two pieces of the strips that meet the quilt should be on the left. Then I kind of just straighten everything out and then I will actually move this pin and pin it in place and then you can add another one or two pins to help you keep it in place. You'll want to make sure that it's also nice and flat. That both strip are flat. Go ahead and grab a fabric marker and a ruler and mark a line from the top corner down to the bottom corner. Again, on one side of this march line should be the two loose ends and on the other side should be the two ends attached to your quilt. This is important that the seam is in the right spot. Once you have marked that line, you will just go ahead and sew right along that line. Do not put it this way. Put it so that the two loose ends are on one side and the two ends meeting your quilter on the other. This is the thing that used to mess up all the time. Once you have sewn along that line, this is what should look like and before cutting away those loose ends. Let's go ahead and lay your flat and make sure that everything looks how you want it to look. The two ends should not be pulling on the quilt at all. It shouldn't be too tight but it also shouldn't be too loose where you can like fold up the binding and it's not flat against the quilt. If it is, just go ahead and rip out the stitches and try again. Mine is looking okay so I'm going to go ahead and trim this back to a quarter inch seam allowance. Make sure you're trimming away the loose ends and not on the other side of your seam. And then I give it a little press and finish sewing on this binding by just sewing a/ 4 inch away from the edge like I did the rest of my binding. And then we will be ready to flip it over and attach it on the other side.
