Here's a tutorial I made on how to use my acrylic blanks! Supplies: - Acrylic blanks (I make my own with a laser cutter using files personally verified... | By Eldritch Owl | Okay. So, I wanted to make you guys a few videos on how I make toppers with acrylic blanks. So, first of all, what is an acrylic blanks? That is one of these. It's a very thin piece of acrylic that has been precision cut to match your frame size. Um when you first get them, they will be not quite so see through. They're covered in a protective film that you kind of have to just scratch off in order to work with it but that way, it keeps it. See, there we go. Safe from scratches. And then the other side's already been taken off. So, that's the blank itself. It's one thirty-2nd of an inch thick. It's very flexible. Um when all is said and done, these are what completed toppers look like. So, They are still flexible, not quite as flexible as the acrylic by itself which is good. You want them to be a little sturdy. Um we've got holes for the magnets to fit in. Um compared to a this is a real pair topper. Um compared to the regular toppers. They are just a hair thinner. And a little bit more flex flexible. So, pear topper. Acrylic blank topper. So, what I do overall is I take a topper. I cover it with scrapbook paper, add my magnets, cover it in UV resin, and then let it So, I'll film follow up video with more details on that. So, I wanted to make you a video of all the supplies you'll need to work with acrylic blanks. So, this is an acrylic blank. This is probably the most important piece, the thing you will need. Uh you can either buy these off of your friendly neighborhood internet vendors or you can cut them yourself using a laser cutter which is what I did. Um so, you're going to need some acrylic blanks. You will need scrapbook paper. Um this is just some of the paper I had lying around I choose to use a silhouette machine. You can also use a cricket machine to cut out the the little frames out of scrap of paper so it's very wobbly. Um then, once you've cut that out, you are going to need some Mod Podge. Um this is just the gloss regular variety and some cruddy paint brushes you can use to paint on the Mod Podge After that, I like to use acrylic resin to dome my topper. So, this is the acrylic resin I have. I got it from Amazon, a link below. In order to cure the resin, you're also going to want a UV light. Um this is just type for nails. I got it with a removable bottom so I don't have to worry about moving the topper itself and then if you're working with UV resin, I do recommend working in a very well-ventilated area or picking up a mask just to be extra safe. This is the one that I use. And that's pretty much it. In my next video, I'll show you how to do everything step by step. So, there is one thing I wanted to show you guys before I get into the process of making toppers is there's a neat trick you can do with the acrylic blanks. So, if you take them shopping with you, you can actually sort of test out scrapbook paper before you buy it so that you can see you can slide it around and see if it it looks cute. Um as much as I love these little cats, to me, I think they're a bad fit. They're a little bit too big and their ears get cut off but if we, oh that one's kind of hard to see but if you move it over to the spider webs, you can see that it's a little more abstract of a design and it works well with the small spaces. So, just one hot tip for you guys. Okay. So, the first thing you want to going to want to do is get some scrapbook paper and cut it out on your silette or cricket machine. Um then, you will need to seal it. So, paper is porous and it can do weird things in resin if you don't seal it first. So, get your Mod Podge and a junky paint brush and we're just going to slap some paint on there. I like to do this on plastic sheeting. I actually just cut in half a little little paper protector that would go in a binder to do this. Because it just makes things neater. So, as you can see, I'm not being neat at all when I paint on here. I'm just trying to make sure that everything is coated in a thin coat of Mod Podge. So, you just sort of slap it on there generously and then if you wanted to, you could leave it to dry on the sheet. I actually like working with a second sheet because I don't want to have to trim off glue ends. So, before it dries, just kind of pry it up a little bit and move it over to the second sheet here and then what you'll do is you wait for it to dry. You will then flip it over, mod podge the other side, wait for that to dry, and you'll be ready to go so now I'll show you how I like to put the magnets into my blanks there are any number of ways you can do this my preferred method is UV resin so that way they are nice and stable so first thing you're going to do is you're going to cut some little pieces of packing tape and you are going to put it right over one side of the hole on your blanks make sure it adheres well and then once you have it on both sides, you are ready to pour some resin. So, I'll see you over there. So, one thing you always want to remember to do is figure out the polarity of your magnets and make sure they're both going the same way. So, what I do is I actually put my little magnets right on my frames and then. them with a marker so that I know which sides need to face out so now what you're going to do is take the smallest amount of UV resin possible and just put in a teeny tiny dab into the magnet hole like seriously some less resin than you think you need Oops, see that was a little bit too much but we'll clean it up in a second. Also important, wear gloves and if you're not doing this in a well-ventilated area, please wear a respirator. So, now what I like to do is take the magnets. I know it's so hard to see and then just kind of put em on there and I like to use a toothpick to scooch them over to the magnets holes. Now, notice, I put the. side down. You can put it up or down. It doesn't matter but make sure you do the same thing on both magnets. So, if you're going to have it down on one side, have it be down on the other. We'll just scoop that in there. And as you can you might be able to see I've kind of made a little bit of a a mess with the resin let me see if I can zoom in so I will just take a cotton swab and kind of smooth around just to make it a little bit neater. Okay. So, now that you've put the mag magnets in the resin, you will want to take your UV light curing station and place it on top of your topper. Um so I I like the ones without the bottoms and then I just let that go for about 99 seconds, then once it's done, I will flip the topper over and cook the other side for 99 seconds using the nail lamp and then we can move on next step. So, just so you can see here, I'm lifting up my lamp. I'm flipping over the topper and we cook it for another 99 seconds. Alright, so the next step after you have attached your magnets is to peel the tape off and you should be fine because resin doesn't stick to packing tape which is a nice trick. Um you'll notice I have lost my little. on that one though. Whoops. So then what I like to do next because I like to be extra sure about these things is take my frames and check the fit make sure that I did the magnets correctly and make sure that I know which side is up so this side here is up so I will place it like that Then, I will take my already cured scrapbook paper that I have Mod Podge on both sides. Put that that to the side for now and then we will get back out our friend Mod Podge and I like using Mod Podge because it's non toxic and it works well. Um so, what we're going to do is we are going to apply Mod Podge to the top of your new toppers. So, again, just kind of paint it on there and also in a sec. Alright, so once you have your toppers thoroughly coated in Mod Podge, you're going to take your scrap of paper and you're going to carefully line it up on top of your toppers. Um since they were both cut using the same file, they should be a perfect fit. Um now is your time to sort of scooch things around, make sure they are the perfect fit. Um before everything dries and once once you've lined everything up what I like to do is move over to my clean plastic put them face down and then cover them with something heavy like a cutting board to dry so we're going to let that dry and come back in a few minutes alright you guys we are almost there this is my acrylic blank with my magnets and my newly adhered scrapbook topper. Now, things you're going to need for this round. Gloves again. You're probably going to want a toothpick. You will need your UV resin and you will need a lamp to cure the resin with. Also, this is very important. You're going to be working going to want to work on a level surface. We're going to be pouring resin over the top of our toppers here and we wanted to not spill over the sides. So, I'm going to not talk during this because it requires a little bit of brain power but check this out. Okay. Whoo. Nothing crazy happens. So, that's awesome. Now, you'll see the resin has sort of flowed out everywhere but not all places and there are some gaps. So, go ahead and fill in the gaps and use your toothpick to sort of smooth out areas that don't have any resin and it'll sort of with the surface tension, it'll want to go everywhere it can. So, we just help it along a little. And the good news is with UV resin, since it cures with UV light and not time, you can afford to be pretty meticulous about this. Um this is also a really good time to take a look at your topper and make sure there are no bubbles in the resin. If you see any bubbles, you can just sort of work them out to the edge with your toothpick so keep doing that until you are satisfied okay so once you have gotten all the bubbles out and make sure that the resin is covering everywhere you want it to cover you will then take your light and place it right on top of the topper and I like to let this go for two round of 99 seconds. And then that's it you're done so this is a fully cured topper see if it fits it should fit before fingerprints everywhere there you go So, super simple, pretty inexpensive as far as hobbies go and if you have any questions, let me know in the comments and I'll do my best to reply. Good luck.
