Grads in Games Search For A Star 2019 Environment Art challenge submission. Assets were produced in 3DS Max, textured in Substance Painter and the scene is rendered in Unreal Engine 4. I also made use of Substance Designer for some of the materials, mainly on the floor and walls of the tunnel, using vertex painting to blend between them.

The Canyon structures were inspired by early frontier mining towns and industrial structures in the American West. The rusted material and raw geometries helped convey practical functions while also maintaining an iconic Star Wars aesthetic. Through these paintings and subsequent sketches we developed a strong underlying story of prospecting and tar abatement. A little mountain village. I got fascinated by some of the villages I'd seen in documentaries of the middle east, so thought I'd try and make one. Whole project took about 6 weeks from start to finish, and I was at it pretty full-on! I hope you like it!
