I wanted to check the reviews on this series but saw that no one has written one yet so I read it and decided to write my own one. This is my first time writing a review so I’ll try to express myself as well as possible and hope to make as much sense. I‘ll rate it by giving my insights on different aspects that will be completely spoiler-free, so enjoy:
Story: Given that the series is only 15 chapters long, the story is very short and often tightly packed. Many things are kind of rushed and need to be reread to be completely understood, but
...
even I as a very cautious and careful reader often did not understand what was going on due to the overall randomness in the story. The story basically follows the protagonist, an executioner, who ends up being killed early in the series and ends up in this weird placed called „hell“. It‘s not the hell you‘d expect and the only real rule is to „live normally“. I‘m not going to go too in-depth but the story evolves into the protagonist trying to live a norma life under these weird circumstances and later meets Jack the Ripper and they later realise that their pasts are actually connected. As the story continues, other side characters often randomly pop up and play their own role, but the main characters are only our protagonist and Jack the Ripper. As a rating I‘ill give the story a 6 due to the randomness and it being fairly hard to follow, but the ending was good and wholesome so that bumped it up a little.
Art: To be honest, there is not much to complain about in the art. The fight scenes are somewhat hard to follow, and it‘s often hard to decipher the difference between flashbacks and the present, but otherwise it‘s pretty good and enjoyable, with no too crazy blow-me-away type of panels. 8/10
Side characters: As mentioned before, many characters often randomly pop up and don‘t really add anything to the story. Some have their own issues and side stories, but overall they mostly add a bit of comedy to the story and nothing more. Since the series is so short, a lot of stuff is also badly explained or not explained at all, and there is so much room for that so I believe they could have done another volume just explaining more aspects of the story and the characters. 6/10
Environment: I felt like this also deserves a place on my review because it‘s very usual and unique. The „hell“ our protagonist ends up in remains, for the entirety of the story, completely unexplained. We don‘t know where it is, how people end up there, what these „monsters“ even are (will make sense if you read it) and what it‘s even for since everyone just kind of exists there and lives normally. There is an association between heaven and hell, but it‘s poorly explained. The people on earth can apparently trespass into a god, which I found really weird, out of place and poorly explained. I think the authors had a good idea, but then implemented it badly. 5/10
I randomly stumbled across this series and it looked very appealing to me even though I never read anything from the mystery genre. I don‘t know if I am a huge fan of it but for people who like the genre I feel like it can easily be a 9/10. Using the arithmetic mean I get 6.25/10, but comparing it to other series I rated I‘d have to give it a bit more, so maybe something like 6.7/10. Thanks for reading! :P
