Interesting episode, though I can't help thinking that they're fishing for random people now. I bet the Black Rose masterminds are feeling the same way...

More students keep opposing Utena's righteous blade, and falling into those body outlines. I understand the writers want to make true the intense scene that is an entire class staring right at the protagonist, looking for vengeance.

Is it really necessary to see pointless side-stories like this, though? Nothing happened that will be referenced again; it was the exact same thing as the last dozen episodes entire series thus far. Earlier examples could at least point to fleshing out the main cast, revealing their backgrounds and motivation.

Keiko here wasn't exactly depth personified. I mean, her trio's private conversations were basically "Aren't we lucky to be servants to this random bitch? I'm pretty sure we are!"

I don't know, to me this sort of could possibly reflect the relationship between Utena and Anthy. Think about it, earlier in the episode Akio told Anthy to stay friends with Utena now what if you can apply what Anthy says at the end of the episode to her relationship with Utena? What if she's only tolerating Utena BECAUSE of her brother? I'm not sure if that's the case but from what I've seen from this series so far I doubt this is particularly random.

I do agree that the series formula is sort of getting redundant though.

^ That's an interesting thought. I thought Anthy was downplaying Utena to protect her. A recurring theme in this series is jealously, and considering the type of relationship Akio keeps with his sister, it's possible he wants to monopolize her devotion. If that's how it is though, the whole plot of the episode doesn't relate.

Maybe it was more about dependence. If I remember right Keiko blended with the other background characters, willingly subjugating herself to Nanami. Like Anthy she was comfortable relying on bigger personalities, and like Utena she really wanted to break out of the submissive role.

The main reason why I love th Black Rose arc is its focus on minor characters. I like this episode and that one about Tsuwabuki because these characters didn't get written off as just Nanami's lackies, and we've been allowed to their thoughts on Nanami. Anyway, Keiko's ill feelings towards Nanami will resurface with a vengence in future episodes. Also, the duel in this episode and the one with Wakaba are one of my favorite duels in the entire series, and it was funny how Keiko realized in the end that Nanami was the one she should be directing her anger at, not Utena.

I don't know, to me this sort of could possibly reflect the relationship between Utena and Anthy. Think about it, earlier in the episode Akio told Anthy to stay friends with Utena now what if you can apply what Anthy says at the end of the episode to her relationship with Utena? Interesting! I've never thought of what Anthy said at the end as it could also be reflecting that she was also using Utena like her brother told her.

It is getting repetitive, but each of the stories are really interesting. I like the huge amount of character study (similar to Penguindrum which is airing now).

wow the irony in what Anthy said to Utena. So, Utena has defeated the whole student counsel (effectively twice now), So what's next ( I have a feeling this Akio guy is about to make his move)?

This is getting old about now. Really need to get a change of plot formula, or get down to business with the villain here, or something. Anything, really. They are digging at the bottom of the bag for characters to throw in this now, and they've finally reached the characters I just don't care about now.

Exactly. The fight should have been between whatshername and Nanami, instead of Utena.

This whole Black Rose arc is really hit or miss (mostly miss) for me. These side characters, especially the ones never seen/introduced before, are really pointless. It was nice to see the side characters that were part of the story from the beginning, like Nanami's little boy and one of Utena's close friends, but no one cares for the random characters. All the episodes associated with Nanami tend to end up as terrible fillers.

nanami was incredibly cruel to that girl. i think she has a right to hate nanami at this point. nanami seems to be a really terrible person in general. i mean she already drowned a cat because her brother loved it, i don't think there is any low she won't stoop to.

the girl herself wasn't very interesting, though. if anything this ep just reinforced what a jerk nanami is. this was probably one of my least favorite episodes so far.

I don't get why Aiko would fight Utena in the first place, did the evil guys tell her to do it so she would get the power to revolutionize the world? And just what exactly is that? I just don't get why she would duel with Utena and not challenge Nanami at all.

Also I don't understand how Nanami can love Touga so freaking much, maybe it's because she doesn't have any other 'friends' or anyone else has ever been close to her than him.

if the anime is going to end like the manga, I'm so giving this series a 3

haven't watched anything as repetitive and annoying in a long time

and regarding this episode - I don't see the point in Utena having to fight her, should have rather been the other girl.

preview for next episode actually looks nice, seems like its focusing on advancing the main plot... or something, hopefully

As should be clear by now in the series, Ikuhara likes themes of cycles and repetition. Since we're only half way through the series and we're already going through the main characters again by way of the so-called secondary characters, it's not really a spoiler to say that we'll probably be seeing these characters again before the series is out ;)

There's actually a lot that can be said about Keiko. One of my favorite essays on her is: Thoughts on the Pigtailed One (No spoilers in the first half of the essay, but stop reading after the line "It's a lot easier to believe you're superior to Anthy Himemiya when you're slapping her around.")

I think the author's pretty on point when s/he calls out Keiko as a darker reflection of Wakaba. Keiko, too, is wanting to be one of the special people who feels lost and betrayed by the events buffeting them about. She's sympathetic in this episode, but she's not as wholly a *nice* person as Wakaba.

Keiko's situation didn't even get any better, I like how this anime doesn't sugarcoat the conclusions with happy endings for some characters.

Still, I find it hilarious that Touga hasn't said a word since Episode 12.

We're all entitled to our opinions of course but I strongly disagree with those who think the Black Rose Arc is repetitive. Well it is repetitive but I disagree that it is redundant.

As others have pointed out it's the emphasis on minor characters that really makes this arc interesting and even if some are stronger than others with the possible exception of the very first one Akio's fiancee I think they've done a good job of telling a compelling story about jealousy and hatred with each minor character we've seen spotlighted.

Also yes it is easy to write off how it reuses the exact same scenes practically to show their indoctrination and departure from the Black Rose Society but I guess I don't mind because to me they're REALLY effective and kind of got more powerful with repetition. They're intense (the characters confessions/ rants always get my hair on end and this was no exception) and they're pretty damn creepy. I'm a big fan of this arc even if I'll admit this episode didn't quite live up to the last one.

Really excited for the conclusion. Oh yeah and lol at Anthy explaining who each of Nanami's lackeys are at the end.

I still don't get why the duelist slept in the same position as the red man printed on the floor. I don't think it was a coincidence when I saw the same thing happened in one of the previous duel.

Actually that has been going on for a while to the other challengers. I think those silhouettes refer to the 100 duelists that died and had their rings taken from them by the Black Rose group. Maybe it also has to do with a part of their negative self dying?

Interesting how Anthy had an umbrella with her to the duel. I wonder what the significance of that is.

At first I thought this arc was meh, but, again, my opinion has turned around since the Jury episode in it. It looks like the arc may be taking a different direction as of the next episode since all of the student council's swords have been defeated again.

I don't have much to add this time around, but there are lots of interesting thoughts floating around in this episode discussion, especially @Ston3_FreeN7's.

Looks like I completely forgot about Touga, now all student council members have had swords pulled out of them. Not sure why Keiko had to draw the sword from Touga instead of Nanami.

Looks like Utena didn't who she was either.

Not sure what Anthy was on about at the end; So Keiko is fine with hanging around Nanami, who she hates and wanted to kill, because she is in love with Touga? That doesn't sound very healthy to me nor "easy" to figure out. Guess Keiko doesn't have much pride.

I hope Touga never recovers, so Nanami can continue her reign of terror while leading the student council with comic ineptitude the rest of the show.

As an aside, I love girls in uniform, and I love 19th century uniforms, so this show is hitting some of my more niche boxes :D

I liked how Touga didn't have any voiced lines in this episode, we didn't even get a glimpse of his face. Similar thing with the party - they organised one, most of main characters went there, and we even saw them talking and spending time together - and yet we don't really know what happened there... Interesting.

Good episode, but I'd really like to come back to main characters soon, pretty please!

I see some people in this thread complaining about Keiko dueling against Utena rather than Nanami.
Uhhh, literally none of the previous Black Rose Duelists have had any business going after Utena.
They've all been manipulated into thinking that they need to kill the Rose Bride and gain the power to revolutionize the world (whatever that is) in order to solve their problems. To achieve that, they must go through Utena, who is the one standing in their way; it's not personal.

Every minor character somewhat related to main characters is being fleshed out insanely well , but the thing is this repetitiveness hurts the main storyline , even though I have no problems with these episodes , pacing is completely different and it turned from early NGE to late NGE episode where they spend entire episode on self-analysis and stuff like that. It's just so much harder to watch it right now.

Maybe I'm more annoyed with the fact they just use enchanted people just to get swords from Student Council members (who all already lost in duels vs Utena) and fight Utena , instead of doing something more... Well , they are out of Student Council members now , what's next? Round 2?

But seriously, who cares about Nanami's mindless minions? Not to mention that after all that happened this episode, Keiko still remained as one-dimensional as when she was first introduced.

I think the propose of this arc resides more on psychological debate and analysis that the series requires and which communicate with its themes, so I think that realizing what's in common among the characters micro universes' complexes is what could make us realize the macro aspect of Utena's universe, otherwise Mikage wouldn't say "Your only option is to revolutionize the world". 'Revolutionizing the world' or 'cracking the world's shell to be born' are something easily said through out the episodes. The duels themselves and the black rose duelists' [fated] defeats (obviously they would be defeated, considering the fact the swords' holders, aka student council members, were defeated by Utena before) are minor compared to the whole, including characters' quotes and dialogues that give us some hints, like Himemiya's last quote about Keiko's facade and her reasons for choosing to be Nanami's servant, which, in this point, they can be analogue to Himemiya's situation and her psyche, that's totally obscure to anyone in this moment.
Anyway, I think is better to quote another commentary of mine here just to increase my argument and opinion:

Lnaua said:
about eps 14 and 15

word 'butterfly' was another meaning for the greek term 'psyche' which also could mean 'spirit', 'soul'. the insect's metamorphosis process symbolically implies human psyche growth, self discovery and illumination... so, I think that's a great hint to start your interpretation about that scenes when Kaoru Kozue and Ohtori Kanae went down by Mikage's confessional-elevator. there is a butterfly stuck in a picture frame on the wall.

p.s.: if you got scared by all messed up siblings relationships in this show, maybe you can get even more so with Angel Sanctuary, which is another subversive and unsystematic content - and if u like this sort of stuff, I think u should check it out

Another boring fight, at this point the only thing to look forward to in the fights is the music. Each fight feels the exact same, feels lazy.

Nanami becomes more unlikeable each episode, and what even was the point of this episode if at the end Keiko went back to being her lackey??
