Undead Unluck

With the conclusion of her favorite romance manga, Fuuko Izumo is ready to end her life of misery and loneliness having long accepted her fate of never being able to experience passionate love like fictional characters. Cursed with "unluck," anyone Fuuko touches is in grave danger of experiencing unimaginable calamity.

While the possibility of imminent danger would have most sane people run in the opposite direction, Undead has other ideas. He is an immortal being with superhuman regenerative powers desperately seeking death, which has always eluded him. When their paths finally cross, Undead sees an opportunity to finally end his suffering by using Fuuko's unluck.

But before Undead can unlock the full potential of Fuuko's power to trigger the final devastating blow, the duo must first fend off a murderous secret organization hell-bent on exterminating those with special abilities.

I really enjoyed this. I didn't expect to. After the first episode I thought it was going to be some gimmicky anime that gets you in with the concept but fails to delivery in any other aspect. I was pleasantly surprised by the way this went.

I love the power system to be honest. That's my favorite thing about it. It's creative. Having negators who negate concepts instead of having standard powers makes for such an interesting watch. The match ups with fights are also interesting because of it. Creativity has to be used and even a weak person can overcome a strong person with ... the right usage.

I also grew to love the character and their stories. I'm not going to go too crazy because I don't have time to write a long review, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think it's a bit underrated because I haven't heart much about it.
Honestly, I enjoyed this more than Chainsaw Man, and that's getting a lot of attention.

Mixed Feelings

It had a promising start... but later...

Undead unluck has an interesting premise. "Negaters", instead of having a super power they Negate an existing concept. Undead, doesn't die. Unluck, project bad luck. Unstoppable, goes roadrunner and so on.

Interesting concept, fun powers with a bit of mystery added as the viewer has to guess at them.

Had the show stopped there it would have been a serviceable action/comedy Shonen.

Sadly as the season went on we ended up with poor pacing, leaps in logic, lack of consequences and main character syndrome... oddly from the female lead of all people.

It had an idea and the battles were ... fun. The plotline and character interaction (with anyone other than each other!) needed some fine toning. The relationship between people made zero sense considering their actions and current circumstances.

Example:-

Our MCs are fighting a group and kill one of their opponents. His partner's reaction once they subdue them is:-

A. Kill them.
B. Beat them up to vent before capturing them officially.
C. Hand them over to their superior.
D. Give them a pat on the back for their spunk, leak out info about one of their group members and instruct them to kill them as well so they can all be on the same team!

The anime has so many head scratching moments where you wonder if an alien wrote this. It does follow the shonen beats but because of these odd choices the plot seems rather janky, more so in the second half of the season. Quite literally an author self insert arc!

Overall the show has it's moments, I just wish it stayed as the dumb action Shonen it was meant to be.

A few years ago, David production were working on a new shounen title called Fire force. Long story short, it was a decent watch dragged down to mediocrity by one major flaw, the fanservice. The show couldn't resist shoving tits and ass right in your face every few minutes, even in the most inopportune of times, like the middle of a fight. It honestly amazes me just how much damage this decision managed to do. It's a damn shame, since the rest of Fire force was solid, but this single decision managed to change my rating from very good to above average. So how is ... any of this relevant? Well, imagine Fire force with mediocre fights, completely fucked pacing, constant changes in tone resulting in massive whiplash and plot contrivances through the roof. That show is called Undead unluck. I get that they were stuck adapting subpar material, but there really isn't an excuse for repeating the mistakes of the past. That being said, there are some good things that I should mention. I like the way Andy fights. Even with a very generic superpower, he manages to use it in a very original, although sometimes very nonsensical, way. The art is also decent. There are some very good scenes, but it's really inconsistent, so there are quite a few stinkers as well. They stopped using the meme 'bruh' sound effects in fights, so at least something has been learned from Fire force. Yeah, as you can see, I am running low on praise here. The silver lining is simply way too thin to rescue the show this time. I know that this is a very short review but there honestly isn't much to be said. Even if we were to ignore the aforementioned problems, the core of Undead unluck is a dime a dozen shonen slop that you have seen a thousand times already. In ten or twenty years, shows like this will probably be mass produced by AI and I doubt anyone will be able to tell the difference.
