Synopsis

Gesicht, an android police detective of Europol, is tasked with finding the murderer of Montblanc, a retired war hero robot. Although it appears that only a robot could have committed this crime, the murder of a renowned robot rights activist casts doubts on the criminal's identity. Indeed, outside of an isolated and unexplained incident that occurred eight years ago, robots are programmed to be unable to kill human beings. However, the lack of human evidence on the crime scene and the similarity of modus operandi lead Gesicht to suspect that the two murderers might be the same being—be they man or robot.

Shortly after Montblanc's passing, another retired elite war robot is mysteriously eliminated. Gesicht notices a pattern in the choice of murder victim: both dead robots belonged to a group of the seven most powerful war machines ever designed. Determined to stop the murderer from eliminating the five remaining veterans, Gesicht seeks help from Atom, a cutting-edge android who resembles a human boy. The duo must now hunt down the rogue killer before the series of murders is carried on, lest the very fabric of society suffer irremediable damage.

Pluto is an awe-inspiring tale birthed from the fusion of two legendary mangakas (Tezuka and Urasawa) separated by time and beautifully delivered by Studio M2 in a way that captures both the heart and origin of the medium while fully realizing what it was eventually capable of achieving. Astro-Boy was the perfect story to represent this idea as a way to look back into the past through the lens of the future, both in reality and fiction. Pluto's themes of grief and hatred begetting hatred are just as relevent as it was then when Astro-Boy was created as it is today, and the topic of ...

Mixed Feelings
Pluto is something of a disjointed narrative that seems to want to say a lot but trips over itself so clumsily that I can't really take it as seriously as it wants to take itself.

To be clear this is a mostly competent story but it's definitely strongest at the start and gets progressively worse as the series goes on, culminating in a fairly contrived ending. This is a similar pattern to that of the other Urasawa work I have read/watched, Monster, where the general concept of the story and sense of journey is strong but the landing can't be stuck and in the end ...

I completely do not understand why Pluto has such a high rating.
I get that it's a niche watch, but acclaimed critics scored this a "masterpiece", along with other titles like "the best netlifx original". Firstly I'd like to say that the animation is overrated - I could see the individual frames in most scenarios and even the "fights", which lasted 3 seconds lacked substance.
It essentially follows a detective who is trying to uncover some plot or whatever, but it just lacks any depth on the combat side of things, and I just generally think there were some plot holes.

Completely unrealistic and overly ambitious with ...
