The Alpina B5 is a small series sports sedan from the Alpina company , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005 . The B5 is based on the BMW 5 Series
History
The B5 is the successor to the Alpina B10 , which was the fastest production sedan in the world from 1989 to 1996. Initially, the main competitor was the Mercedes-Benz E 55 AMG, today the E 63 AMG.
The basis is the BMW E60 and the 4.4-l engine from the former 545i / 745i. Compared to the BMW model, the Alpina B5 has larger brakes, a new chassis with electronic damper control (EDC chassis), a stainless steel silencer system with polished twin tailpipes and the changes to the exterior and interior that are typical for Alpina.
The 4.4 l V8 is charged by means of a rotary compressor (radial compressor). The charger obtained from the company ASA is also called "Turbessor" because it is supposed to combine the advantages of a turbocharger and a compressor. At low speeds, it responds spontaneously like a conventional displacement compressor, but it can also immediately deliver the thrust of a turbo. Just like this, it also reaches speeds of more than 100,000 revolutions per minute. As a result of this measure, the output increased from the standard 245 kW (333 PS) to 368 kW (500 PS). The torque has been increased from the standard 450 Nm to 700 Nm. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels by means of a ZF six-speed automatic transmission (6HP 26). As usual with Alpina, this has been refined and has the "Switch-Tronic".
Alpina B5 S
Alpina presented the revised B5 S at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt. The combustion process was optimized by changing the camshaft spread. This results in a significantly lower exhaust gas temperature, which is the basis for the increase in performance. The output of the 4.4-liter V8 was increased by 22 kW to 390 kW (530 hp). The torque increased by 25 Nm to 725 Nm. The B5 S sprints to 100 km / h in 4.6 s; the vmax increases to 317 km / h.
One innovation is the ZF six-speed Sport Switch Tronic transmission. The switching time has been shortened by 50% compared to its predecessor. The response time is 1/10 s. In manual mode, the driving experience is comparable to the shifting dynamics of a dual clutch transmission .Another innovation is the EDC chassis, which has been revised in cooperation with Sachs Race Engineering.
