The Heron

A Poem

time has changed,
daylight saving time ended,
a strange concept that only
the humans in the USA comprehend.

I walk out of the house
in predawn-almost-daylight,
the same “time” as the day before,
but now I’m starting my workday
in almost darkness.

I open the front door
and startle a magnificent being
also starting its day.
it was peacefully
wading in the creek
20 feet away from my front door,
unfazed by time changes,
unchanged by eons.

the great blue heron
flies up from its breakfast
of minnows and crawdads
and secret water beings.
a whoosh of wings!
a flap of blue!
then down the valley, it glides.
a timeless, ancient, bird
unchanged since mammoths walked the earth,
a graceful dinosaur
in dazzling blue feathers.

This beautiful visitor has been hanging around my neck of the woods (as they say) and I am so grateful. It probably won’t stay long, the creek is small, so even though there are plenty of minnows in it for its size, a big bird like that won’t be able to find a bellyful for very long. But it’s great while it’s here.
