The Bosch Spin-Off Series That's Taking Over Prime Video's Streaming Charts
Image
Amazon's Prime Video has carved quite a niche for itself as the premiere outlet for what I affectionately call "Dad TV." These shows take place in a world of square-jawed, broad-shouldered dudes who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty to do what needs to be done. No one, and I mean no one, better captures this specific genre of TV than Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch. Starring the gruff "Deadwood" and "Lost" alum Titus Welliver, the series had a healthy seven season run on Prime Video, which is a rare accomplishment these days where streaming shows are lucky to get even two seasons.

Premiering in 2014, "Bosch" adapted a series of novels by "The Lincoln Lawyer" author Michael Connelly with hard boiled titles like "City of Bones" and "The Concrete Blonde." The series aired its final episode in 2020, but that didn't mean Amazon was getting out of the Bosch business. They almost...

Abraham’s Boys: Titus Welliver discusses his approach to playing Van Helsing
Victor Polster in Girl (2018)
Four years ago, we heard that Tea Shop Productions, the company behind 47 Meters Down, had hired Imitation Girl and Lucky director Natasha Kermani to write and direct a feature adaptation of Joe Hill‘s short story Abraham’s Boys. Two months ago, we finally got an update on the project when it was announced that Rlje Films and the Shudder streaming service had acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the film. They recently brought it to theatres, and JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy had the chance to talk to cast member Titus Welliver (Bosch) about the character he plays in the film – the legendary Abraham Van Helsing! You can find out what Welliver had to say about his approach to the character by watching the video embedded above.

Hill’s action-horror story is described as a “follow-up of sorts” to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The story tests the relationships Stoker formed in his original novel.

Titus Welliver's 100% Rt Show Gets An Exciting Season 2 Filming Update
Image
Actor Titus Welliver is known for playing Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch in the shows Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, but his new crime drama, which boasts a 100% Rt score, has an exciting season 2 filming update. Based on the Harry Bosch books by Michael Connelly, Prime Video’s Bosch is considered one of the best modern detective shows. A large part of that comes down to the compelling performance of Titus Welliver.

Even before Bosch, Welliver was known for acting in police dramas and crime shows. He acted in CSI, Sons of Anarchy, and Deadwood, to name a few. This made him the perfect choice to play Bosch in Prime Video’s original series. AcrossBosch and Bosch: Legacy’s nine seasons, Welliver and the writers made Harry Bosch a complex and morally fascinating character. Sadly, his time as the main character of a series came to an end withBosch: Legacy’s divisive finale.

'Bosch' Spin-Off Star Fears 'Ballard' Will Face the Same Fate as Titus Welliver's Beloved Series
Image
Maggie Q might be all smiles on the Ballard red carpet, but she’s no stranger to disappointment in the television industry — and she’s keeping her expectations in check, even as her new Bosch spin-off hits #1 on Prime Video. In a recent conversation promoting Ballard, which debuted July 9, the Nikita and Designated Survivor star shared her excitement — and wariness — about what’s next for her LAPD cold case detective series. The show marks a new chapter for the Bosch universe, but with Bosch: Legacy unexpectedly wrapping up after Season 3 despite strong viewership and critical praise, Maggie Q is understandably cautious.

“I have no sense [of the future],” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake.

Bosch Franchise Star to Lead TV Adaptation of Popular Crime Novel Series
Image
After the end of Bosch: Legacy, franchise vet Madison Lintz has landed her next big TV role.

Per Variety, Lintz is set to star in Eve Ronin, a television adaptation of Lee Goldberg's series of crime novels. She is also on board as an executive producer for the project, which doesn't yet have a network attached. No other cast members have yet been revealed. Other EPs include Craig Dorfman, Lorraine Toussaint, Derek Dudley, and Shelby Stone of ID8 Multimedia.

“I am beyond thrilled to bring Eve Ronin to life,” Lintz said in a statement about the project. “From the moment I picked up Lee’s books, I knew this was a character and a story I needed to be a part of. Eve’s determination, complexity, and resilience make her a dream role, and I am honored to take on this challenge on both sides of the camera.”

Titus Welliver’s ‘Bosch’ Ending Episodes to Watch Before Ballard
Image
The Bosch universe might have taken a brief interlude following the recent conclusion of Bosch: Legacy on Prime Video. However, Ballard, featuring Maggie Q in the titular leading role, is doing a commendable job of carrying the banner forward.

Ballard dropped all its episodes together on Prime Video on July 9. One can’t help but appreciate the connections that have tied the final season of Bosch: Legacy and Ballard together. In all fairness, it can be held that the third and final season of Bosch: Legacy consisted of two such episodes that served as staging grounds for what may transpire on the debut season of Ballard.

The third season of Bosch: Legacy once again brought the case of the Flower Girls to attention. An unexpected turn of events led to the introduction of Renee Ballard as the new officer working in conjunction with Harry to lead the case to its conclusion.

'Bosch' Fans Flock to New Spin-Off Despite the Series' Controversial Cancellation
Image
Bosch: Legacy may have reached its end, but the world of Harry Bosch is anything but finished. In fact, fans of the long-running Prime Video franchise are already embracing its next chapter — Ballard, the brand-new spin-off led by Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, has shot straight to the top of the streaming charts, currently sitting at #1 on Prime Video. The series picks up the baton from Titus Welliver’s iconic Bosch, continuing the gritty crime storytelling that has defined the franchise for nearly a decade. But while Ballard shares DNA with its predecessor, it isn’t simply Bosch 2.0 — and that’s exactly the point. Speaking to Collider’s Aidan Kelley at the show’s premiere, Maggie Q was clear about what sets her character apart.

“They’re very similar in so many ways. But obviously Harry Bosch is a bit more rogue. Ballard has to color more within...

Titus Welliver’s $154 Million Crime Thriller With a Taylor Sheridan Fan-Favorite Is Leaving Streaming Soon
Image
Titus Welliver wrapped up the final season of Bosch: Legacy earlier this year, and although he’s due to feature in several episodes of the Ballard spin-off, another older project from the star has become a surprising streaming hit. Welliver stars alongside Jeremy Renner (Mayor of Kingstown) and Ben Affleck (Argo) in The Town, the classic crime thriller following a group of thieves who rob a bank and hold the manager hostage. The Town is currently streaming on Netflix. Unfortunately, after a run of streaming success, the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film will be on July 31. The Town earned strong scores of 92% from critics and 85% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed a whopping $154 million at the global box office against a modest $37 million budget.

The Town comes from the mind of Ben Affleck, who has won Oscars for Screenwriting (Good Will Hunting...

This 100%-Rated Cop Drama Is Crushing It On Prime Video — But It’s Still Flying Under The Radar
Image
Ballard On Prime Video(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

A few days ago, a spin-off of a widely acclaimed police procedural series quietly premiered on Amazon Prime Video, earning praise from critics and audiences. Despite the rave reviews, the gripping cop drama is still flying under the radar for many viewers. We are talking about Ballard, the Bosch spin-off starring Maggie Q in the lead role.

For the unversed, the original series Bosch featured Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, an ex-Special Forces officer turned no-nonsense homicide detective in LAPD’s Hollywood division. He investigated complex murder cases, used his sharp crime-solving skills, and brought elusive culprits to justice.

Now, according to FlixPatrol, the Bosch spin-off Ballard has bagged the No.1 spot on Prime Video’s list of most popular TV shows. Read on to find out what it’s all about and why it deserves a spot on your Ott watchlist.

We Were Liars Gets Dethroned by Titus Welliver’s 100%-Rated Spin-Off Series
Image
Prime Video‘s latest hit, Titus Welliver’s Bosch spin-off, Ballard, has officially dethroned We Were Liars. According to FlixPatrol, the series rose to the top of the platform’s streaming chart just days after its July 9 debut. The spin-off series from Michael Connelly’s acclaimed Bosch universe now holds a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Maggie Q shines in a powerhouse performance, leading an underfunded LAPD cold case unit.

In Contrast, We Were Liars, which premiered June 18, now sits in second place after a strong but short-lived reign. Viewers are shifting from psychological thrillers to police procedurals. Ballard proves there’s still a huge appetite for morally complex crime dramas.

Why The Latest Dracula Adaptation Makes 1 Major Change To Its Short Story Explained By Director & Author: "It Was A Great Idea"
Image
Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story is the upcoming adaptation of Joe Hill's acclaimed short story of the same name, which is in turn inspired by Bram Stoker's iconic piece of gothic horror, Dracula. The movie stars Brady Hepner, Titus Welliver, and Jocelin Donahue in the lead roles, with newcomer Natasha Kermani behind the camera.

For the most part, the story of Abraham's Boys stays true to Hill's narrative: it follows the two young sons of Abraham Van Helsing as they reckon with their father's paranoid behavior and erratic experiments. The story offers a fresh take on Stoker's timeless character, exploring themes as universal as humanity, ambition, and fatherhood in the process.

However, Kermani's on-screen adaptation of Abraham's Boys also takes some major creative liberties and diverges from Hill's story in many instances. Speaking with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, the director elaborated upon her decision to rewrite the...

‘Ballard’ Season 1 Release Schedule: Are More Episodes on the Way?
Image
Looking for a new crime show fix? “Ballard” is here for you. And the good news for those who don’t like waiting for new episodes each week, you don’t have to.

Taking place in the “Bosch” universe, “Ballard” centers on Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) as she leads the LAPD’s new cold case division, which is, of course, underfunded as the cases have remained open for quite some time.

“As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer’s string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD,” the synopsis teases.

“With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.”

Here’s when you can watch the spinoff.

What is the release date?

“Ballard” premiered worldwide on Wednesday,...

‘The Lincoln Lawyer’s Star Is Eyeing Up a ‘Bosch’ Crossover With Titus Welliver [Exclusive]
Image
For The Lincoln Lawyer star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, there's one dream collaboration that keeps coming up — and it involves another big name from the Michael Connelly universe. In an exclusive conversation following his press run for Jurassic World Rebirth, Garcia-Rulfo told Collider's Christina Radish he’s 100% on board with the idea of a crossover between Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver).

“That would be amazing,” he says with a grin, clearly excited by the possibility. “Because I always wanted to meet Titus, he came to visit one day on set and it was perfect. It was so cool. I would love to work with him, but I guess it’s impossible. It would be amazing though.”

That’s the unfortunate reality: The Lincoln Lawyer is a Netflix series, while Bosch and Bosch: Legacyare Amazon Prime Video properties. Still, it hasn’t stopped fans — or Garcia-Rulfo — from imagining what it...

'The Lincoln Lawyer' Star, 44, Teases "A Lot of Maggie and Mickey" in Emotional Season 4 [Exclusive]
Image
After being out of the picture for much of Season 3 of Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer, Maggie McPherson is about to have a big role in what's being billed as the show's most personal yet. Neve Campbell was promoted to a series regular earlier this year when Season 4 was officially ordered, and it all but assured that the attorney would remain close by her ex-husband Mickey Haller's side as he fights the murder charges against him. It's the perfect time for a comeback, as Maggie has long been a fan favorite and an emotional anchor for Mickey, given the history the characters share. Series star Manuel García-Rulfo promises that their ever-evolving relationship will be front and center in the upcoming run, too.

In the wake of his recent role in Jurassic World Rebirth, García-Rulfo recently sat down with Collider's Christina Radish for a larger profile exploring his journey to stardom.

'Bosch' Star Finds Their Next Crime Series Following 'Legacy's Controversial Cancellation

Bosch: Legacy may have ended, but Madison Lintz isn’t leaving the crime genre behind just yet. The Bosch breakout has officially signed on to star in and executive produce Eve Ronin, a new TV adaptation of Lee Goldberg’s bestselling crime novels published by Thomas & Mercer/Amazon Publishing. ‘Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story’ Casts a Sinister Shadow Over One of Horror’s Greatest Heroes [Review]
Image
In the 128 years since Bram Stoker’s genre defining Dracula was published, we’ve seen Abraham Van Helsing depicted in a number of ways. From a scientific savior and eccentric kook to an action star staking vampires in 19th century finery, we know him as a knowledgeable champion and the malevolent Count’s greatest rival. It’s he who swoops in to save the undead Lucy Westenra from an eternity of stalking children through the night and he who becomes the galvanizing force that ultimately ends Dracula’s reign of terror.

But not everyone views this Dutch nobleman as an unwavering protagonist. Joe Hill’s 2005 short story “Abraham’s Boys” takes a different approach, positioning the scientific crusader as equally nefarious to his bloodsucking foe. Director Natasha Kermani expands this disturbing exposé in an unusual sequel to Stoker’s classic tale. Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story challenges our belief in...

Mimi Rogers, Titus Welliver, and Madison Lintz in Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Interviews: Maggie Q and co-stars discuss the Bosch spin-off Ballard
Mimi Rogers, Titus Welliver, and Madison Lintz in Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Mockingly referred to as “your dad’s favorite show”, Bosch was a long-running hit for Prime Video followed by the sequel series Bosch: Legacy, which ran for three seasons. Bosch: Legacy recently ended its run and included Maggie Q in the finale as the title character in her own series, Ballard. Based on the novels by Michael Connelly, Ballard brings a new perspective to the shared universe inhabited by Harry Bosch but with a new point of view

Ballard follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q) as she leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer’s string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. ‘Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story’ Review: An Intriguing but Sluggish Postscript for the Count’s Nemesis
Image
Plenty of horror movies have shifted the focus from vampires to vampire hunters, imagining an underground network of stake-drivers combatting the elusive breed of bloodsuckers. Sometimes the two sides overlap, as in the “Blade” films. “Abraham’s Boys” has the gist of an original angle that goes straight to the primary source of modern vampire mythologies.

Here, the protagonist is Dutch undead expert Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who’d been called to England to fight a supernatural nemesis in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” That polymath, famously played by everyone from Peter Cushing, Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins to Willem Dafoe (in last year’s “Nosferatu”), is now a recluse in the New World, hiding out from spectral pursuers 18 years after he’d helped orchestrate the Count’s extinction.

The twist is that fear of reprisal has turned this learned man into a paranoid tyrant, holding his family hostage in joyless...

Here's Why Bosch Fans Need to Watch Titus Welliver's New Crime Series
Image
After playing an incorruptible detective for almost ten years, Titus Welliver is shifting gears in The Westies. Far removed from Harry Bosch, Welliver is instead a morally ambiguous cop in the upcoming TV series.

MGM's new crime thriller is gritty and violent like The Sopranos and Peaky Blinders, based on Titus Welliver's backgrounder for The Westies. Speaking with Collider, the actor said that he couldn't resist the show's premise and historical context. The prospect of acting opposite J.K. Simmons also helped. "[The series] takes place around 1981. J.K. plays the leader of the Irish gang in Hell's Kitchen in New York, The Westies, and I'm from the same neighborhood. We came up together, but I'm a police officer," Welliver explained.

The new role seemed well within Welliver's wheelhouse, but he said fans are in for a shock; his character Glenn Keenan isn't exactly an upstanding cop. "He's no Harry Bosch, but believe me,...

The 8 Best New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend on Netflix, Hulu and More
Image
The biggest new title of the week is undoubtedly James Gunn’s “Superman,” which hits theaters nationwide Friday. That does not mean, though, that there aren’t some exciting and noteworthy streaming movies and TV series premiering this week. On the contrary, multiple major, promising shows are coming to Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+.

With that in mind, here are the eight best new movies and shows that you can stream this week.

“The Phoenician Scheme” is another playful, exuberantly made ensemble comedy from writer-director Wes Anderson. The “Asteroid City” filmmaker’s latest effort follows a wealthy businessman (a perfectly cast Benicio Del Toro) whose decision to appoint his estranged daughter, a nun (Mia Threapleton), as the sole heir to his estate ends up sending them on a life-and-death journey.

Mark Wahlberg’s $1.1 Billion Team-Up With ‘Bosch’s Star Is a Global Streaming Juggernaut
Image
Titus Welliver will always be known for playing Harry Bosch in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, but over 10 years ago, he starred alongside Mark Wahlberg in a big-budget action thriller that’s returned to global streaming charts. Welliver and Wahlberg star alongside Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer in Transformers: Age of Extinction, the fourth Transformers movie in Michael Bay’ explosive action franchise following the Autobots, who turned to a mechanic (Wahlberg) and his family for help when humanity begins hunting Optimus Prime. Transformers: Age of Extinction is currently streaming on Paramount+ in America and globally, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform in the United States and other countries, like France. The film earned “rotten” scores of 18% from critics and 50% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but that didn’t stop it from grossing $1.1 billion against a $210 million budget.

‘Bosch’ Has Been Replaced by ‘Ballard’ — But Who Is She? Its Star Explains
Image
After a decade of Titus Welliver’s grumpy detective anchoring Prime Video’s Bosch universe, the baton has officially been passed. With Bosch: Legacy wrapping up its third and final season, the franchise isn’t slowing down — it’s pivoting. Enter Ballard, a new spin-off starring Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, a character pulled straight from Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels. She operates in the same world, solves the same kinds of brutal crimes — but make no mistake: she’s a different kind of detective. So, who is Renée Ballard? According to the actor who plays her, she’s not Bosch 2.0. She’s something else entirely.

At the Ballard red carpet premiere, Maggie Q told Collider's Aidan Kelley that while her character shares Bosch’s famous commitment to justice, their methods — and the worlds they operate in — aren’t one-to-one. “They’re very similar in so many ways,...

New Dracula Horror Movie Starring Bosch Actor Debuts With Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Dracula, Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, endures as a towering monument of gothic literature, its shadow stretching across centuries and cultures. With a mesmerizing blend of horror, sensuality, and dark romanticism, the Count has seduced generations of readers and filmmakers alike, from F.W. Murnau's silent nightmare Nosferatu (1922) to Bela Lugosi's haunting gaze in Dracula (1931).

Christopher Lee starred in Hammer's Dracula movies, his sanguine presence on full display in ten films, cementing the Count's cinematic immortality. Later, Francis Ford Coppola's opulent 1992 adaptation draped the tale in velvet and tragedy. More recently, Robert Eggers breathed eerie life into the legend with a new Nosferatu. Each adaptation reflects each era's fears and fascinations, but the Count's hypnotic pull remains undiminished.

However, not all Dracula adaptations are kissed by moonlight, and in fact, there is a new movie coming out that is drawing the ire of critics.

'Bosch' Star Titus Welliver's New Vampire Movie Defies Expectations According to Horror Icon [Exclusive]
Image
Since first being dreamt up in Dracula, Bram Stoker’s iconic piece of dark gothic fiction, Abraham Van Helsing has been reimagined and adapted almost as many times as the undead killer at the center of the tale. Movies like Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Patrick Lussier’s Dracula 2000 have brought the monster slayer to live-action form, as he shows up to be the savior of those caught under the hypnotic demon’s spell. But when Joe Hill set out to write his short story, Abraham’s Boys, he wanted to paint the heroic character in a different light. Instead of the brave and selfless Van Helsing that audiences have seen in the past, Hill’s main character would depict the culmination of trauma from hunting things that go bump in the night all while trying to keep his family safe — or at least his definition of “safe.

‘Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story’ Review: Joe Hill Adaptation Is (Un)dead on Arrival
Image
Have you ever wandered the post-apocalyptic wasteland with a nuclear bomb in your pocket? I sure have. And although it may not seem like the “Fallout” games have much to do with writer/director Natasha Kermani’s “Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story” — adapted from the horror tale by Joe Hill (“The Black Phone”) — the film evokes a feeling that’s familiar to many gamers. It’s the one where you hang onto your best weapon the whole time, waiting for the right moment to use it, only to reach the end and realize it’s too late. You wasted every chance.

“Abraham’s Boys” has many secret weapons. The film’s stars, Titus Welliver (“Bosch”) and Jocelin Donahue (“The Last Stop in Yuma County”) are two of the best in the game. They play Abraham and Mina Van Helsing, characters from the pages of “Dracula” who married after the death of Mina’s husband.

Titus Welliver Teases His Next Supernatural Horror Role After Shock 'Bosch' Cancellation [Exclusive]
Image
Titus Welliver is trading cold cases for cold-blooded monsters. With Bosch: Legacy wrapped and the Ballard spin-off about to begin, Welliver is stepping into very different territory in Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story, a haunting new reimagining of Van Helsing lore from director Natasha Kermani. The film, based on Joe Hill’s short story, premieres July 11 — and if you’re expecting a campy vampire romp, think again.

“Well, I didn’t read the story until I read the script, Natasha’s adaptation, first, which I was kind of blown away by,” Welliver told Collider. “That was not a hard decision to make. I felt like the characters were all really incredibly well realized and compelling. And then I read the short story by Joe Hill, and they mesh really perfectly.”

The story follows Welliver’s Abraham Van Helsing in 1915, raising his two sons (played by Judah Mackey and Brady Hepner...

Now streaming, and based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels, “Ballard” centers on Detective Renee Ballard, the fearless new leader of LAPD’s cold case unit. The thing about this unit is, it’s made up entirely of volunteers, and has no money being funneled into it to help.

Still, those volunteers are pretty good. Here’s who you’ll recognize among them.

Maggie Q in “Ballard.” (Greg Gayne/Prime Video) Reneé Ballard (Maggie Q)

Reneé Ballard leads the LAPD’s new cold case division, and is the protagonist of our story. She’s played by Maggie Q, who you might recognize from the “Divergent” franchise, “Designated Survivor” and more.

Maggie Q Wasn’t Looking to Lead Another TV Show — But Then ‘Ballard’ Came Along
Image
[This story contains mild spoilers from the first two episodes of Ballard.]

Sometimes when you’re not looking for something, forces of nature beckon you to the opportunity you didn’t know you needed. That’s what happened to Maggie Q with Ballard.

She says she believes that fate was at work when she got sent the scripts to play the Ballard lead, who was introduced in the finale of the first Bosch spinoff that recently concluded, Bosch: Legacy with star Titus Welliver.

“I was on a flight to New Zealand and was sent the first six or seven scripts,” Q explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “I said to my agents, ‘I will let you know when I land what I think.’ It was a 14-hour flight and sadly, most things you read,...

‘Ballard’ Review: Maggie Q Brings Heart and Grit to Excellent ‘Bosch’ Spinoff
Image
Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) first showed up on screen in the series finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” where she and Harry F—king Bosch (Titus Welliver) reluctantly worked on a case together. But even if you’ve not seen an episode of “Bosch,” you’ll get oriented to “Ballard” right quick. It’s one of the great TV procedurals in recent years, a feat of plotting, character, performance, and using the medium to poke at a society that breeds it.

Q’s detective is working in a literal and figurative basement in the hierarchy of the LAPD, trying to crack the coldest of cases after an accusation of misconduct rankled the wrong feathers up the chain of command. With an island of misfit toys — that is to say, volunteer law enforcement that are retired, reserve or just civilians — Ballard does her diligence to ensure justice for the people whose cases have long been forgotten,...

As 'Bosch's Replacement Debuts on Prime Video, His Brother's Movie With Matthew McConaughey Is a Sleeper Hit in America
Image
It’s a big week for the Bosch universe. While fans say goodbye to Titus Welliver’s iconic detective after Bosch: Legacywrapped its final season earlier this year, the next chapter has officially arrived. Ballard premieres July 9 on Prime Video, and the verdict is already in: it’s a winner. The Bosch spin-off is boasting a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from its first batch of reviews, with critics praising Ballard for carving out its own identity. That’s no small feat when you’re stepping out of Harry Bosch’s very long shadow—and doing it without the man himself.

But here’s the twist: while Ballard kicks off a new era on Prime Video, another Connelly creation is enjoying a surprise resurgence elsewhere. Matthew McConaughey’s 2011 legal thriller The Lincoln Lawyer—based on Michael Connelly’s novel of the same name—has just hit Paramount+ and cracked the U.

Michael Connelly Wants a Jack McAvoy Series After 'Bosch' and 'Ballard' on Prime Video
Image
First there was Bosch, then Bosch: Legacy. Now the world of Michael Connelly is expanding again with Ballard, the newest series to hit Prime Video based on the crime fiction of the author. Taking a lead from its predecessors, Ballard has plenty of links to Bosch – including featuring the man himself (played by Titus Welliver) in several episodes. However, while speaking to MovieWeb’sGeorge Edelman, Connelly reflected on which of his other characters he believes could be the next Bosch replacement for crime fans.

Harry Bosch has been the most prominent character in Connelly’s extensive library of novels, from his first appearance in 1992’s The Black Echo through to The Waiting in 2024, which also features the protagonist of the new series, Renee Ballard, played by Maggie Q. For Connelly, though, there is another character would has appeared several times in his work that could also deserve their own time to shine.

‘Ballard’ Prime Video Review: ‘Bosch’ Spin-off Reminiscent Of Netflix’s ‘Dept Q’
Image
Amazon Prime’s Ballard will definitely remind you of Netflix’s recent hit show, Dept Q, and drawing a comparison between the two is only natural. The plot is pretty much the same—a detective is tasked with investigating cold cases with limited resources, and as we know by now, the team usually consists of a ragtag bunch of misfits. Their idiosyncrasies not only add depth to the story but also bring in multiple perspectives and introduce side plots that are equally intriguing. The difference between Dept Q and Ballard is definitely in their treatment, which in a way reflects the worldview of the central characters.

What is all the more interesting is that both shows are adapted from book series—Dept Q is based on Jussi Adler Olsen’s Danish book series, and Ballard is adapted from the Renee Ballard series by Michael Connelly. If you’re a Bosch fan,...

Maggie Q Reveals Titus Welliver’s Surprising Advice Ahead of ‘Bosch’ Spinoff ‘Ballard’
Image
Before starring on the new Bosch spinoff Ballard, Maggie Q got some words of advice from the franchise’s star, Titus Welliver. “He gave me a lot of advice. He’s a great guy, and I know you guys have interviewed him and you know him,” Q shared on the third hour of Today‘s Tuesday, July 8, episode. “He’s like a brother, he feels like family and he’s just such a gracious human. And I know that when his show ended and he was sort of prepping me for the future, he was like, ‘Q, plant your flag. Do not give in. Be strong.’ And he’s like, ‘Your instincts are correct, so just follow those,’ and it was great.’” Q went on to note that Welliver “literally” passed down his role as the franchise’s lead to her. “He gave me the baton in front of the LAPD police chief and said,...

After Bosch: Legacy Cancelation, Ballard's Future Gets an Optimistic Update Ahead of Premiere
Image
Bosch: Legacy may have aired its last episodes in March, but a spin-off starring Maggie Q as Ballard will hit screens very soon. Ahead of the release, the show's creator shared an exciting update about where things are headed.

Speaking with Screen Rant, author Michael Connelly, who created the Bosch series and the upcoming Ballard spinoff, said he's confident the show is going to perform well. "We don't have a green light yet [for Season 2], we're going to see how the show does. We are very confident that the show is going to do well, because if you've seen it, you know that it's going to appeal to people. So, hopefully we'll get a second season, and then we'll be off."

New 'Bosch' Spinoff 'Ballard' Scores 100% on Rotten Tomatoes!
Image
Many fans were incredibly disappointed when it was announced that the ever-popular Bosch: Legacy was ending on Prime Video after just three seasons. Led by Titus Welliver as dogged detective Harry Bosch, the show and its predecessor – the six-season run simply entitled Bosch – maintained a 100% Tomatometer score in all but its very first season. Now, a new spinoff based on another character created by author Michael Connelly, Ballard, is picking up the mantel, and it looks like the series is not about to disappoint.

Led by Maggie Q as Renée Ballard, leader of a new but massively underfunded cold case department of the LAPD. As per the synopsis, “As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer's string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. Ballard Season 2 Chances Addressed By Michael Connelly Ahead Of Bosch Spinoff's Premiere
Image
Author Michael Connelly speaks about the future of Ballard beyond season 1. The series is a spinoff of Bosch: Legacy, which concluded its third and final season in 2025. Its parent series, Bosch, had a successful run from 2021-2024. Ballard season 1 premieres on Prime Video on July 9. Conneley co-created the series with Michael Alaimo, and serves as an executive producer.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Connelly speaks about his hopes for season 2. A second installment has not been greenlit yet, but Connelly is hopeful. He believes that the show will appeal to audiences and that "the show does have legs." ‘Abraham’s Boys’ Review: Shudder’s Slow-Cooked, Sun-Drenched Dracula Reinvention Melts Off the Bone
Image
A morbid curiosity lingers throughout Abraham’s Boys, the new horror drama from director Natasha Kermani and writer Joe Hill. It takes the same foundational impulse behind the recent wave of low-effort childhood character reinventions—think public domain exploitation with no budget or vision—but filters it through a prestige lens and genuine creative ambition. Instead of nostalgia bait, it turns to one of horror’s most enduring literary texts, mining Bram Stoker’s gothic classic Dracula for something deeply intimate and unsettling. Hitting theaters this month via IFC and Shudder, the film is a deliberate and unnerving exhumation of legacy and monsters, both real and remembered. Sun-drenched and slow-burning, Kermani’s latest feature reimagines the Dracula mythos with striking originality.

Based on the short story by Joe Hill, Abraham’s Boys picks up years after the events of Dracula, centering on the sons of Abraham Van Helsing: Max (Brady Hepner) and Rudy (Judah Macley). Their father,...

Ballard TV Review: Maggie Q leads Prime Video’s latest entry in the Bosch universe
Image
Plot: Ballard continues to bring Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels to life, following Detective Renée Ballard as she leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer’s string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch, Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.

Review: Bosch has been a mainstay on Prime Video since 2014 when the Titus Welliver-led procedural series began adapting the long-running novel series by Michael Connelly. After seven seasons and a three-season sequel, Bosch: Legacy, the original show came to an end back in April with an episode that introduced viewers to Renee Ballard.
