Summit Hill 03:02
Thought about why children lie Held the shell of a snail near their eye Crumbled soul on hollow ground Swallowed paper conscious found In the cold on a winter's night Kiss of gold with pale green light St. Paul’s where he and I call home Felt a force with calming tone Oh when it comes then it comes Oh when it comes then it comes Oh then it comes We’d trudge ourselves on Summit Hill Wind would howl its open shrill Imagine life in those cobblestones His father lived to paint their homes Oh when it comes then it comes Oh when it comes then it comes Oh then it comes The snow would pile and kill our phones We’d lie on ice till it numbed our bones We’d creep inside after smoke would pass To see how long our time could last Oh when it comes then it comes Oh when it comes then it comes Oh when it comes then it comes Oh when it comes then it comes Oh then it comes

Ganon 02:18
The sand may weigh me down The river used to love me now I’ll walk into the fire And wait until the hour Yeah A goblin chewed me down And showed me what is this here sound A dragon stood me up I looked him right into the eye I slept until I woke My sister called me up that morning The trees just watched him drown And wrapped it all across my forehead
3.
Well the fog can take me Looking down the rearview Maybe contemplate me I just want to see you Coming home You can call me baby I just want to feel you Sure you’ll start to hate me I just want to get through Tell me what’s wrong Tell me what’s true All of the things you like to do Everything’s wrong Everything’s blue Call it whatever you’d like to You tried to break town To New York City They’ll move you all around They think that you’re pretty But hear that sound You’re already gone You’re gone you’re gone You gone you’re gone Oh a thought could save me Looking down the rearview Wings had caught and melted Ocean’s going to see who you were all along Maybe I could love you Wishing on the clear blue Blame the sky it bait me Just another young fool Tell me what’s wrong Tell me what’s true All of the things you like to do Everything’s wrong Everything’s blue Call it whatever you’d like to You tried to break town To New York City They’ll move you all around They think that you’re pretty But hear that sound You’re already gone You’re gone you’re gone You gone you’re gone You tried to break town To New York City They’ll move you all around They think that you’re pretty But hear that sound You’re already gone You’re gone you’re gone You gone You tried to break town To New York City They’ll move you all around They think that you’re pretty But hear that sound You’re already gone You’re gone you’re gone You’re gone you’re gone

Broken Twin 03:29
Broken Twin You’ve gotten thin Could you survive me Could you survive me A walk of life Cropped by the scythe Would you revive me Would you revive me And the times we had hold still And the times we had hold still Still alive Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate And in time it’s all to be fine Gone in You clipped his chin Dare to defy me Dare to defy me Choked on a laugh The pain won’t last Would you remind me Would you remind me That the times we had hold still That the times we had hold still Still alive That the times we had hold still That the times we had hold still Still alive Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate And in time it’s all to be fine It started to phase me No time can run out It started to play me The word had come round I sorted the colors and followed the sound Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate Blood trial Oh god The days we complicate And in time it’s all to be fine

Big Brother 03:48
Black fire Cheek chewed On trial Pick up those beat shoes Pipe down Play cool Follow me Only after school Don’t you know me Don’t you know me We grew up from the same cut Now outgrow me Now outgrow me And I’ll just turn to rust Big brother why you broke me down We got two chance and one pair of pants Big brother why you broke me down We got four eyes and one will to last Twenty ‘08 was a close call If you didn’t fall you might best be the worst of all Cause you and I were just dumb kids A cracked lip wasn’t the worst of it I-35 was a close call If you didn’t fall you might just be the worst of all Don’t you know me Don’t you know me We grew up from the same cut Now outgrow me Now outgrow me And I’ll just turn to rust Big brother why you broke me down We got two chance and one pair of pants Big brother why you broke me down We got four eyes and one will to last Big brother why you broke me down We got two chance and one pair of pants Big brother why you broke me down We got four eyes and one will to last

Caster 02:58
Oh the guard lives to break me down Some might call that hope Life’s rivers seem to sweep me back Watch them shift that fault Oh the table can’t hold me up I might just drop to the ground Oh the weight that’s bigger than us all Someone’s gotta make that call Young, blind caster bouts the knight Blade inbound Oh they’re loving living in the commie town Gotta free the commie town Smile wide but don’t you force me Fool’s fire might make you lonely For a while we been tired and hungry Enough, oh Oh my vision’s been a little thrown off I might just make my rounds Oh the brothers and sisters that took the toll Damn I gotta still stand tall Oh the double helix that claims us all We gotta make do right now Oh been shriveled to play a fearful thought Saying can I still be bought Smile wide but don’t you force me Fool’s fire might make you lonely For a while we been tired and hungry Enough, oh

3 02:42
On my own I’m a little tied up Don’t you cry when you fill a little cup Don’t you cry when you’ve got a little cup Don’t you cry when you’ve got a little cup Now I’ve been in your arms Never been down then you’ve never been warm Never been down then you’ve never been warm Never been down then you’ve never been warm Maybe I hold you on my back Back pocket is a little bit wack Back pocket is a little bit wack Back pocket is a little bit wack Wow I walk and frown even when you call me out I walk and frown even when you call me out Said I walk and frown even when you call me out Said you calmed me down A baby’s born and a little tied up On my neck it’s a little tied up Around my neck I’m a little tied up Around my neck I’m a little tied up I went downtown to fill up my trust All my town it’s a little tied up In my town I’m a little tied up In my town I’m a little tied up If you go and don’t try You need to learn to let it go And just cry If you go and don’t try You need to learn to let it go If you go and don’t try You need to learn to let it go And just cry If you go and don’t try You need to learn to let it go

Oh Well 04:03
You watched it fall apart Never brought to show and tell Blood pooling on the floor Oh you really know yourself They screaming in the car Waiting as the traffic dwells You held your fingers crossed Oh you know me so well (Oooo) And then the stars fell (Oooo) You know me so well He left you all alone The attic of some old man’s house You watched the TV glow As he struggles to feed your mouths She’s sent to padded rooms That’s just how it is oh well You held your fingers crossed Oh you know me so well (Oooo) And then the stars fell (Oooo) Oh you know me so well Why did it take you so long Why did it take you so long Why did it take you so long Why did it take you so long Why did it take you so long Why did it take you so long

Can we go back Know it’s coming soon Should we stay out Take up some room Johnny grow’d up Swept by the broom He let it flow out He let it consume A couple more rounds Something on the news He hit up the town A couple more views He blew out his crown, yeah There’s nothing he could do There was nothing he could do Did you sharpen your teeth Or born to be the cavity Do you truly believe Cause you can’t see It’s captivity Hall of Egress Can we go back Know it’s coming soon Should we stay out Take up some room Johnny grow’d up Swept by the broom He let it flow out He let it consume A couple more rounds Something on the news He hit up the town A couple more views They blew out his crown Yeah, there was nothing they could do They said nothing they could do Did you sharpen your teeth Or born to be the cavity Do you truly believe Cause you can’t see It’s captivity

Haha Halo 03:02
Just hold me softly I’ll be good God made me softly I’ll be good A heavy lantern walking on stone Her eyes drifted right to the back of her skull And there might have been something walking down the street On the left of my shoulder She was calling out to me She was still Hold me softly I’ll be good God made me softly I’ll be good The air grew cold and wind starts to shift I was only there to pass on the kiss As her light blew out a thought occurred to me It was heard in her voice She was calling back to see She said still Hold me softly I’ll be good God made me softly I’ll be good
11.
My father used to wake me up On a blankless night No fear or concern of walking Under the newborn light Yeah he’d tear me up And fought off the shame I’ll never talk it off There’s only one to blame We walked when we shivered It never calmed us down We slept and still felt strange We’re sort of all the same Well you called my bluff You got you got the blood spin You better lock me up You got you got the blood spin You know you knocked me down You got you got the blood spin You better back me up You got the blood spin Fall again Broke and bound Yeah that anger caught Smelled a storm at noon Not to share my thoughts More likely fix my tune But when I’d see him well up It’d truly break my heart And so I’d smash my head That in me it wouldn’t start I walked when we shivered It never calmed us down I slept and still felt strange We’re sort of all the same Well you called my bluff You got you got the blood spin You better lock me up You got you got the blood spin You know you knocked me down You got you got the blood spin You better back me up You got the blood spin Fall again Broke and bound

The Bed 02:20
Get in the bed I held your head You took your time There’s more to be said Oh you change your mind Every time you walk me through The ground is soft Held in a cough Word of swine Drink from the trough Oh you change your mind Every time you walk me through Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down They landed a man North of Pakistan Sorted a plane For which it stands Oh you change your mind Every time you walk me through Gonna live this life Filled with strife The old man just laughed And filled up his pipe Oh you change your mind Every time you walk me through Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Said get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down Get in the bed well you won’t get down

about

Vermont-based singer-songwriter Lutalo Jones describes The Academy as their “first chapter” – a time capsule of the lessons they’ve learned in their 20-something years of life. “This record is exactly that: a ‘record’ of my early life,” they say of their debut album, out via Winspear. “The experiences, thoughts and feelings I was holding at those times and am currently processing. To me, this is the first big stamp of my existence I’m sharing.” Recorded in January 2024 at the storied Sonic Ranch studio in El Paso, Texas, and self-produced along with Jake Aron (Snail Mail, Protomartyr, L’Rain), hearing The Academy feels like watching the best underground film you’ve seen in years; through one character’s specific story, it’s intensely affecting, establishing Lutalo as a singular voice of this generation of indie rock.

Lutalo’s breakthrough came in 2022 with their EP Once Now, Then Again, which The Guardian heralded as “eminently comforting.” While that project introduced them as a lo-fi acoustic guitar wunderkind, The Academy is bigger and bolder without compromising Lutalo’s inviting sense of emotional intimacy, inspired by alt-rock veterans like Thom Yorke and Rob Crow as well as electronic greats like Aphex Twin and Bowery Electric. The Academy’s grander arrangements are heard in the biting adrenaline rush of “Ocean Swallows Him Whole,” or the anti-war jangle of album closer “The Bed.” Their lyrics are often deeply intuitive, flowing as a stream of consciousness, albeit with weighty meanings. Take “Big Brother,” which borrows the namesake character of Orwell’s 1984 to illustrate the 2008 housing crisis that left Lutalo’s family homeless: “Big brother, why you broke me down?/We got two chance and one pair of pants,” they sing, reflecting on their own role as an older sibling, and how their family dynamic shifted amid catastrophic systemic oppression. “We got four eyes, and one will to last.”

The album’s title is a double entendre in itself, referring to the general youth experience as well as Lutalo’s actual school – the very same school F. Scott Fitzgerald also just so happened to briefly attend. On the gorgeous folksy number “Summit Hill,” Lutalo recalls wandering around its namesake neighborhood with their best friend, admiring the mansions, longing for a life just as grand. “We both grew up in low income households, yet both were accepted into one of the most expensive schools in the state on scholarship,” Lutalo explains. “Similarly to The Great Gatsby, there was a heavy juxtaposition of lifestyles. Even though we were young, we held these memories of a time where we had less responsibility. Waiting for our time to be comfortable.” The Academy zeroes in on the false promise of the American dream and how it can turn those very dreamers into victims: “She’s sent to padded rooms/That’s just how it is, oh well,” they sing on the reverb-heavy rocker “Oh Well,” delineating their childhood in painful memories of their parents’ separation and mental health crises.

The Academy delves deep into Lutalo’s early life, but at the same time, it only just scratches the surface. “We won’t see the full story until I’m dead, realistically,” they say. “As time goes on, and the dots begin to connect as I continue to release, I’m hoping that people can then come back to this record in the future and view it as something special.” Considering how special The Academy already feels, that’s a highly plausible dream.
