Additional information
This is a shortened version of an earlier paper. I have omitted the whole of the last section, on alternative bases, the last half of Section IX on the scope of the two definitions of being classical, and the first part of Section IV on reformulations of the existence criteria when the disjointness, differentiation or world actualism assumptions are dropped. Some other changes have also been made. I should like to thank the referee for suggesting some of the cuts and for supplying some valuable references.
