Abstract
Environmental regulation in the UK and across Europe has evolved significantly in response to industrial development, new technologies and materials, improved scientific knowledge and understanding of environmental impacts, and public perceptions and concerns. Some activities have been prevented or severely constrained, limits have been imposed on releases to air, land and water, and industry required to use the best techniques to prevent and control pollution. International agreements and collaborations between industry, regulators and legislators across Europe have secured greater consistency and better practices and standards. Direct regulation and enforcement have been supplemented by pioneering initiatives including the better use of environmental management systems, financial incentives and civil penalties. However, deregulation, red tape challenges, reduced regulatory resources and reduced public and political engagement are also impacting on environment regulation and the drive for sustainable development. Separation from the European Union will result in challenges and opportunities.
