Abstract

The basic concepts of set theory are developed. Ordered pairs, relations and functions are then defined in terms of sets. The process of induction is introduced and used to prove Bernoulli’s inequality and to define finite sums, finite products and several other concepts. The chapter ends with the basic properties of complex numbers and of finite sums, including the binomial theorem.
