A ranger fatally shot a person today at Valley of Fire State Park outside of Las Vegas while responding to an unspecified call, according to the Nevada Division of State Parks.

The shooting happened this afternoon at the park about 45 miles northeast of Las Vegas, officials said.

A Nevada state park ranger stationed at the park discharged their service weapon while responding to the call, officials said. One person was struck and was pronounced dead by medics at the scene, officials said.

The park ranger was not injured, officials said.

No details were immediately released about what prompted the shooting.

The investigation was ongoing, and the park was closed to visitors, officials said.

Valley of Fire, just south of Overton, is known for its 40,000 acres of red Aztec sandstone outcrops amid gray and tan limestone. Established in 1935, the park also contains petrified trees and petroglyphs dating back more than 2,000 years.
