From my Art Blog

I write about work in progress in my studio and other art-related observations on my blog. Learning to see more and dig a little deeper. I hope you'll join me.

Layers and Details – How are they Created?
How do I create layers and details in my painted fabric wall quilts? Which color goes down first, and then how do the colors build layers? I had a great time talking about the process – and more – with Artburst Studios. We talked about color mixing, creating a body of work and even how to hang textile wall art. The conversation was fun and packed with information. Come listen in.
Water and Rust images fill this art quilt
Acrylic paints and fabric create a rich surface texture in this artquilt. I reconstructed the work from an earlier concept and describe on my blog the creative process. It’s about the meaning of the images, and the story and the use of rich colors to pull it all together.
Art Inspiration and What Comes Next
Where does inspiration come from? How do you develop up the ideas after you have the seed of inspiration? In my studio I create textile collage artworks finished as art quilts. In this blog post I share some of my insights about the creative process.
Hand Printmaking on Fabric
The simple pleasures of the hand printmaking process has easy rhythms. In a recent printmaking session, I kept things simple: Three different substrates to print on (Kraft paper. Sheer fabric. Muslin.) Three ink colors. (Raw Sienna. Burnt Sienna. Black.) A gelatin printing plate. A few of my favorite stencils. Then I just printed. Ink up the plate. Press. Pull. Repeat. Do again on the same sheet – different color. Press the ghost of that print to a new sheet. These fabrics will be incorporated into a large quilt-in-progress.
New textile artwork-in-progress
Creating original fabric with acrylic paints is at the heart of my textile artmaking. When I start a big piece like this, I begin to see the finished product. I print patterns with hand cut stencils, silkscreen printing, relief and resist and direct painting. I invite you to follow along my works-in-progress in the studio.
Printing Bright Green - Acrylic Paint Monotypes
This week the color green is speaking to me. In my studio I’ve set up my worktable for some hand monotype printing on thin papers. These will be collaged into compositions. How do you get a bright transparent color? How do you mix the right color? Come on into my studio in this blog post for artmaking work in progress.
Acrylics + Stencils: One of a kind fabric art
Design – Cut – Place – Paint. I’m bringing some bright green leaves to life to go with another section of painted fabric. The finished art quilt will depict underwater deep blues and greens. The sun-filled leaves suggest the life above water. In my studio I work with acrylics on fabric. Come take at look at my artmaking process.
Building Deep Color Depths
How to build up deep colors and depth with limited variables: only 3 paint colors (brown burnt sienna, brown burnt umber plus black) plus a few substrates: cotton muslin, a cotton blend bedsheet, brown kraft paper, (recycled from packaging material in a box I had received. The shipper used a LOT!) and a few sheets of tissue paper. I have a purpose in mind. I am beginning my thoughts on a large work depicting a burned structure, depicting the loss that remains. So, I need some deep color to physically depict char and smoke, and to connote emotional depth. I walk through this experimental printing session with you on my blog.
Color-Mixing; Theme and Variation
Mixing Colors: theme and variation. I mix all my colors from a limited palette using artist-grade acrylics for works on fabric and paper. With studio practice, you learn how to mix colors you love, and how to vary them to work well together. Come inside my studio to see.
A light in the attic window
A warm yellow light in the attic is visible through blue shadows. This is a storytelling artquilt that explores memories and dreams. Textile collage, constructed as an art quilt, provides the materials for creating works with meaning,
Surprises happen in the art studio
A Box on the porch. And Other Surprises. I write about my artmaking experiences in the studio. Seeing work evolve. Working through composition issues. This week held some surprises. An artwork delivery. Some color experiments. I work in textile collage with surface design using acrylic paints, and invite readers into my practice to discover along with me.
Work in Progress: Colors on Textile Art
Colors just don’t do what they do all by themselves. Color works because it is next to another color, or on top of another color, or mixed with a another color. I talk through a small color-based composition in my studio, where I create one-of-o-a-kind textile collages and art quilts using acrylics on fabrics. See the work in progress.
Art for a sacred space
Creating artwork for a sacred space. Have you created a commissioned piece of artwork, or commissioned an artist to create one? On my blog I explain the process and show the finished result of a commissioned wall quilt for a church in New Hampshire.
Peek behind the scenes at an art exhibit
Want to take a peek at the inner workings of an art exhibit? I’m getting prepped to participate in ArtBurst Studios Poetry In Motion exhibit this month. (This little bird is a detail of one of the pieces I’ll be showing.) I created twelve new works. And a lot else has to happen too. Take a look at how this project works to connect artists with art patrons.
Work in Progress – parts coming together
“The Story Comes Together.” Projects from the past several weeks alomg with an idea to dig into a story… coming together in a new textile composition. Work in progress. I create hand printed fabrics with acrylic. This work includes screen printing, monotype, resists, relief and stencils. Then these pieces will be collaged together into a finished art quilt.
