This paper proposes a genetic algorithm based on simulated annealing solutions (GA-SA) to solve r... more This paper proposes a genetic algorithm based on simulated annealing solutions (GA-SA) to solve ramp rate constrained dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problems for generating units with nonmonotonically and monotonically increasing incremental cost (IC) functions. Genetic algorithm (GA) uses a simulated annealing (SA) solution as a base solution in order to reduce the search effort towards the optimal solution. The developed GA-SA algorithm is tested on the generating unit systems in the range of 10 to 40 over the entire dispatch periods. As transmission line losses are included, the solutions are near the optimal solutions of zoom brute force (ZBF) and zoom dynamic programming (ZDP), and are less expensive than those obtained from SA, local search (LS), GA based on merit order loading solutions (GA-MOL) and merit order loading (MOL), thereby leading to substantial fuel cost savings. The proposed GA-SA is effective in solving constrained dynamic economic dispatch in terms of the quality of solution

This paper presents main concepts in design of a hybrid telematic system for cooperative rescue operations in cases of emergencies or catas- trophes based on results of a user requirement analysis. A rescue squad of humans and tele-operated (semi)autonomous robots is expected to inspect selected spaces, rescue persons, etc. in emergency missions (e.g. fire, poisonous or infectious agent intoxication, etc.) and to interact with the environment. and collaborate in this mission one with another. Moreover, humans and robots in the field will cooperate with a telematic center in order to communicate and receive advices and assistance from the remote coordinator. The paper presents design concepts concerning system architecture, communica- tion and data exchange between entities, user interface design, localization and cooperative planning.

The teleoperated control and the autonomous path following is implemented on the robots for the semiautonomous navigation in the simulated firing scenario. This paper focuses on the robot entities in the PeLoTe project (building presence through localization for hybrid telematic teams). The architecture of the software integration for mobile robots into the PeLoTe system and the experimental results are presented.

A series of micro-robots (MERLIN: Mobile Experimental Robots for Locomotion and Intelligent Navig... more A series of micro-robots (MERLIN: Mobile Experimental Robots for Locomotion and Intelligent Navigation) has been designed and implemented for a broad spectrum of indoor and outdoor tasks on basis of standardized functional modules like sensors, actuators, communication by radio link. The sensors onboard on the MERLIN robot can be divided into two categories: internal sensors for low-level control and for measuring the state of the robot and external sensors for obstacle detection, modeling of the environment and position estimation and navigation of the robot in a global co-ordinate system. The special emphasis of this paper is to describe the capabilities of MERLIN for obstacle detection, targets detection and for distance measurement. Besides ultrasonic sensors a new camera based on PMD-technology is used. This Photonic Mixer Device (PMD) represents a new electro-optic device that provides a smart interface between the world of incoherent optical signals and the world of their electronic signal processing. This PMD-technology directly enables 3D-imaging by means of the time-of-flight (TOF) principle. It offers an extremely high potential for new solutions in the robotics application field. The PMD-Technology opens up amazing new perspectives for obstacle detection systems, target acquisition as well as mapping of unknown environments.
