Akio Niimi, MD, PhD

Akio Niimi is Professor of Department of Medical Oncology and Immunology, Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and Head of Respiratory Medicine, Nagoya City University Hospital, Nagoya, Japan. He qualified at Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, and was appointed to his present post in 2012. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in English on asthma, chronic cough, COPD, mycobacterial infection and other fields of respiratory medicine, including those published in Lancet, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He is currently a faculty of American Cough Conference and member of Asthma Prevention and Management Guideline committee of the Japanese Society of Allergology, and committee of Guideline for Cough Management of the Japanese Respiratory Society. He also serves on the Editorial Board of CHEST, Cough, Pulmonary Medicine, Japanese Journal of Allergology and the Annals of the Japanese Respiratory Society. He has been repeatedly awarded the Top Reviewers for CHEST. He acts as a director of the Japanese Society of Allergology, the Japanese Society for Tuberculosis, and the Japanese Society for Respiratory Endoscopy. He is one of the pioneer doctors who advocated a specialist clinic of chronic cough in Japan.
