Affrikaner prisoners from the Boer War were held by the British on the Island of St. Helena in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. They were allowed to make folk art items, such as carved wooden canes, for sale to visitors to earn some money and while away the time

June 28, 1901 - The first contingent of Boer War prisoners arrived aboard the SS Armenian and were transferred to internment camps set up at Darrell’s and Burt Island. Over the next 18 months, Bermuda would receive more than 4,000 Boer War POWs.
