Several vulnerability analysis techniques in web-based applications detect and report on differen... more Several vulnerability analysis techniques in web-based applications detect and report on different types of vulnerabilities. However, no single technique provides a generic technology-independent handling of Web-based vulnerabilities. In this paper we present our experience with and experimental exemplification of using the application vulnerability description language (AVDL) to realize a unified data model for technology-independent vulnerability analysis of Web applications. This work is part of a project that is funded by the Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies, Ministry of Defence Singapore.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the extent to which cognitive status and decline in cognitive status predi... more OBJECTIVES: To examine the extent to which cognitive status and decline in cognitive status predict mortality in older Mexican Americans.DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort.SETTING: Older Mexican Americans residing in five southwestern states in the United States.PARTICIPANTS: Two thousand six hundred twenty-five persons aged 65 and older living in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and California.MEASUREMENTS: The cognitive function of participants was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in 1993–94 and again in 1995–96. Cognitive decline was defined using two sets of criteria: a drop to 17 or less (moderate-severe cognitive impairment) on the MMSE at 2-year follow-up and a decrease of at least four points, a threshold change in scores that was used to predict mortality in this sample. Cox proportional hazards models were conducted to examine the association between the MMSE and increased risk for mortality, after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, medical conditions, and depressive symptoms.RESULTS: Five-year mortality risk was significantly associated with persons in the moderately-severely cognitively impaired category (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.35, P < .001). Moreover, mild cognitive impairment was also predictive of mortality in older Mexicans (HR = 1.45, P < .001). Two-year declines in cognitive functioning, particularly in persons who had declined to the moderate-severe impairment category (HR = 2.23, P < .001) and those who dropped at least four points on the MMSE (HR = 1.30, P < .001), were predictive of mortality 3 years later, after controlling for important variables.CONCLUSIONS: Baseline moderate-severe and mild cognitive status and 2-year decline in cognitive functioning independently predict mortality in older Mexican Americans. Although age and selected medical conditions have been reported as the more salient predictors of mortality, cognitive functioning should be considered part of identifying older persons at high risk for underlying medical conditions and mortality.
Similar to the situation in other tumour types, it is currently unclear whether fluorodeoxyglucos... more Similar to the situation in other tumour types, it is currently unclear whether fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is adequate in the detection of bone metastases of thyroid cancer. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the performance of bone scans in comparison with FDG PET in the detection of bone metastases in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Twenty-four patients had undergone both FDG PET and bone scans within 6 months because of suspected bone metastases. All scans were re-evaluated using all available additional imaging and clinical data for verification. Scan findings were scored as positive, negative or doubtful. Bone metastases were present in eight of 24 (33%) patients. Only bone scintigraphy but not FDG PET suggested the presence of bone metastases in three patients, all confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/X-ray. Five patients were identified with bone metastases on both bone scan and FDG PET, which was confirmed by computed tomography (CT)/MRI/X-ray in four. Five patients had doubtful findings on bone scans whereas FDG PET scans were negative. MRI showed degenerative disorders in two of five and was normal in two. Eleven patients had both a negative bone scan and FDG PET scan. In three of eight (38%) thyroid cancer patients bone metastases were only identified on bone scans. Therefore, bone scans are still valuable in detecting bone metastases in patients with DTC and can not be replaced by FDG PET.
