Skin infections occur commonly and often present therapeutic challenges to practitioners due to the growing concerns regarding multidrug-resistant bacterial, viral, and fungal strains. The antimicrobial properties of zinc sulfate and copper sulfate are well known and have been investigated for many years. However, the synergistic activity between these two metal ions as antimicrobial ingredients has not been evaluated in topical formulations. Objective. The aims of the present study were to (1) formulate topical creams and gels containing zinc and copper alone or in combination and (2) evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of these metal ions in the formulations. Method. Formulation of the gels and creams was followed by evaluating their organoleptic characteristics, physicochemical properties, and in vitro antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In vitro studies were conducted to investigate the anti-staphylococcal activity of crude extracts... more In vitro studies were conducted to investigate the anti-staphylococcal activity of crude extracts of two strains of Pisolithus albus collected from different hosts in the vicinity of Pune University Campus, Pune, India. Organic solvents of increasing polarities were used for extraction of secondary metabolites. In addition, bioactive components of known antimicrobial activity were isolated and tested against thirty strains of clinical isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Strong activity was exhibited by ethyl acetate and methanol extracts while aqueous extract showed weak activity. All strains were resistant to the chloroform extract. Maximum effectiveness was recorded for sesquiterpenoids extract (zone diameter: 16.67 to 31.5 mm). Triterpenoids and diterpenoids extracts displayed weak to moderate activity. Methods Bacteria, B. fragilis and B. thetaiotaomicron were grown on brain heart infusion (BHI) broth medium supplemented with Royal jelly in three different concentrations (2.5%, 5% and 10% v/v), both of the bacteria (1.5 × 10 cfu/mL) were inoculated to BHI broth contained Royal jelly in anaerobic condition. Antimicrobial activity of Ganoderma praelongum, Ganoderma resinaceum and Ganoderma lucidum were e... more Antimicrobial activity of Ganoderma praelongum, Ganoderma resinaceum and Ganoderma lucidum were evaluated against thirty strains of clinical isolates of methicillin resistant and methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) by the well agar diffusion and microtiter plate dilution. Chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water were used as extractive solvents. Standard antibiotic disks of methicillin, vancomycin, linezolid, and mupirocin were used for susceptibility testing of the test microorganisms. Maximum activity of crude extracts was exhibited by ethyl acetate. Sesquiterpeoids extract of G. praelongum (35.67 ± 0.62 mm) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.390 – 6.25 mg/ml. Diterpenoids and triterpenoids displayed moderate activity while polysaccharides IIIa and IIIb showed weak activity. All bacterial strains were resistant to polysaccharides I and II.

In this investigation, we evaluated topical gel preparations of Ganoderma praelongum and Glycyrrhiza glabra aqueous extracts alone and in combination for antimicrobial and wound healing activities in MRSA - infected excision and incision wound models in mice. Gel formulations containing 0.3% G. praelongum , 2.5% G. glabra and combination of the two were prepared and tested for their influence on wound infection, wound contraction and epithelization phases of wound healing. Mupirocin ointment was applied as a standard treatment antibiotic. Results indicated that all three gel formulations promoted wound healing in both models by influencing wound contraction and epithelization phases.
