Zoo became infected with naturally acquired West Nile virus encephalitis that caused neurologic s... more Zoo became infected with naturally acquired West Nile virus encephalitis that caused neurologic signs, which, associated with other medical problems, led to euthanasia. The diagnosis was based on immunohistochemical assay of brain lesions, reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction, and virus isolation. West Nile virus (WNV) is an arbovirus in the Flaviviridae family, which may cause inapparent infection, mild febrile illness, meningitis, encephalitis, and death in birds and mammals, including humans (1–3). Wild birds are the principal reservoirs of WNV, and mosquitoes, especially Culex species, are the primary vectors (4). WNV has caused several epidemics in the last 10 years

Partial sequences of a novel papillomavirus were amplified from a cutaneous lesion biopsy of a ra... more Partial sequences of a novel papillomavirus were amplified from a cutaneous lesion biopsy of a raccoon (Procyon lotor), by using PCR with degenerate papillomavirus-specific primers. The Procyon lotor papillomavirus type 1 (PlPV-1) DNA was amplified with long template PCR in two overlapping fragments, together encompassing the entire genome, and the complete PlPV-1 genomic sequence was determined. The PlPV-1 genome consists of 8170 bp, and contains the typical papillomaviral open reading frames, encoding five early proteins and two late capsid proteins. Besides the classical non-coding region (NCR1) between the end of L1 and the start of E6, PlPV-1 contains an additional non-coding region (NCR2) of 1065 bp between the early and late protein region, which has previously also been described for the canine oral papillomavirus (COPV) and the Felis domesticus papillomavirus (FdPV-1). Forty adult, male Atlantic walruses ( Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) were successfully immobilized f... more Forty adult, male Atlantic walruses ( Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) were successfully immobilized for the attachment of global positioning system loggers on their tusks and collection of various biological samples. A standard dose of 7.8 mg etorphine was used for each animal, regardless of body size. All animals were reversed with an iv or im injection of 250 mg naltrexone, immediately after tag attachment. Twenty-seven of the animals were intubated and ventilated with 100% oxygen during the recovery period. The induction time was, on average, 4 min 51 sec ± 1 min 46 sec. Several animals had venous pH, and Pcolevels that indicated severe acidosis and hypercarbia. All animals recovered within an average of 5 min 16 sec ± 2 min 47 sec after reversal. The total time from darting to recovery was 15 min 23 sec ± 3 min 33 sec.
