The objective of this study was to examine the perspectives of supervising dentists (also known as dental preceptors) at rural CBDE sites regarding the University of Nebraska Medical Center program's effectiveness in improving the competencies of dental students. Surveys were sent to all forty-three preceptors in two subsequent years: nineteen responded to all questions in 2012 and sixteen in 2013, for a total of thirty-five participants. These preceptors evaluated the effectiveness of the program based on the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Competencies for the New General Dentist. Overall, these preceptors rated the CBDE program as effective (excellent or very good) in improving the students' competence in five of the six ADEA domains: Critical Thinki...

We analyzed Medicare data for approximately 200,000 older adults (≥66 year old) who had been diagnosed with lung, colorectal, female breast, or prostate cancer and died in 2008. The cost of end-of-life care was quantified as Medicare payments for the last 12 months of care including hospice, inpatient, outpatient, and home health care. End-of-life costs were examined separately for the four cancer sites and linear regression was used to estimate rural-urban differences after adjusting for demographic variables, socioeconomic status, and comorbidities. On average, the last year of medical care for these cancer patients cost Medicare more than $50,000 per patient. Regression results suggested that patients in rural areas spent less in their last one year of life on medical care than their urban counterparts. Patie...

The study design is a cross-sectional correlational study design. The unit of analysis is the LHD. The study population includes a nationwide sample of LHDs (N = 337). Data was obtained from the National Association of County and City Health Officials' (NACCHO) 2008 National Profile of Local Health Departments. Interdependence was operationalized as partnerships with health care providers, community partnership, and academic partnerships. Munificence was operationalized as total revenue, full-time equivalents (FTEs) per capita, and population. Uncertainty was operationalized as competition (i.e., number of LHDs within state). The outcome of interest is the extent (i.e., total count) of essential services provision by the LHD. Control variables include geographic location, governance structure, and j...

The majority of HRSA funded Public Health Training Centers defined the public health workforce as the governmental (state and local health departments) public health workforce. Purpose of the Stakeholder Needs Assessment The purpose of the Stakeholder Needs Assessments is to identify and prioritize public health training needs among key stakeholders in Nebraska including: community organizations, local health departments, health care provider organizations and tribal health leaders. The findings from the needs assessment will be used to inform outreach/education and training activities of the Great Plains Public Health Training Center. Objectives of the Needs Assessment To Identify and describe (within community organizations, tribal health organizations, health care provider organizations and Local Health Departments in Nebraska): Stakeholders' perspectives of public health compe...

Curriculum design and pedagogical methods are central components for developing healthcare management and leadership competencies. Various stakeholders have identified competency domains and typologies that outline the requisite skills and expertise to manage and lead healthcare organizations. This study analyzes survey data over a ten-year period from alumni one-year post graduation to compare self-reported assessment of competency development. Trends across two graduate professional programs tailored to different students of healthcare administration are compared. A total of 302 alumni responded to the survey. A factor analysis is performed to evaluate how the skills, knowledge, and abilities of graduates fit into identified competency domains. Fourteen competencies on the survey load into four factor domains: leadership, communication, business skills, and technology.
