This study sought to understand how students in Turkish grammar classes at three state high schoo... more This study sought to understand how students in Turkish grammar classes at three state high schools in Turkey perceive their teachers and the classroom interaction. A total of 142 students were asked to form metaphorical expressions to describe their teachers. A total of 124 metaphors were produced, an examination of which revealed that almost half of the students had fairly negative perceptions of their teachers. Teachers were also described to render roles of a teacher centred/fronted position. With metaphors mostly denoting passive roles for students and control oriented classroom management strategies for teachers, this study concludes that it may be conductive if teachers could revise their classroom management strategies.

Bu calismada, cocuk edebiyatinin onem olan Kucuk Prens adli eserin Turkce ve Azerbaycanca iki cevirisi; deyimler ve atasozlerinin kullanimi acisindan ele alinmistir. Kucuk Prens cocuk romaninin Azerbaycanca ve Turkce cevirilerinin atasozleri ve deyimler acisindan incelenmesi sonucunda Azerbaycanca cevirinin 114, Turkce cevirinin 118 deyim icerdigi anlasilmaktadir. Cevirilerden yalnizca Turkce olani bir tek atasozu icermektedir. Bununla birlikte her iki ceviride de cok fazla miktarda ikilemeye yer verildigi gorulmektedir. Bu ikilemelerin de pek cogunun soyut anlatimlara dayali oldugu anlasilmaktadir. Boylece bu eserin her iki cevirisinin de 11 yas alti cocuklar icin uygun olmadigi gorulmektedir.

This study investigates the relationship between academic self-concept (ASC) and first term marks... more This study investigates the relationship between academic self-concept (ASC) and first term marks of sixth grade students from their Turkish course. 74 students from two state primary schools in Turkey participated in this self-report survey study. ASC was assessed through a Turkish version of Myself-As-a-Learner Scale (MALS) (Burden, 2012) while achievement was measured by composite course mark at the end of Term I. Data analysis showed that female and male participants had varying levels of ACS, with girls reporting more positive academic self concept. It was also found that Turkish marks correlated significantly with ASC. The relationship was still significant when gender was controlled, implying the gender variable did not have any moderating effect. This study concludes that understanding ASC can provide useful information to teachers of Turkish and other fields alike both at the level of prediction and intervention.

This suffix produces adjectives that are related with root meanings like dönme dolap, sallama çay, gömme dolap, and adjectives like bodoslama atla, silme doldur etc. Besides these functions, it produces permanent nouns like gözleme, sarma, dolma, dondurma, kuzukapama, sürme, etc. This study investigates the suffix -ma as a derivational form and its functions have been classified. The study also evaluates the frequency with which it is used to coin permanent nouns and adjectives.
