It transfers what has been learned from the past with different expectations to the present and the future. In this respect, artists of the 18th and 19th centuries relate to the forms of the past in a completely different way. Naples-born Luigi Mayer (1750-1803), of German origin, was an artist of the pre-Napoleonic period. He works for Sir Robert Ainslie, who was the British ambassador to the Porte between 1776 and 1794. During this period, he made countless drawings accompanying his numerous journeys in the vast Ottoman geography. These drawings, which joined Ainslie's collection, were instrumental in the ambassador's election as a member of The Society of Dilettanti in 1795. This society pioneered the most important archeological excavations in Greece and Anatolia until the middle of the 19th century.
However, it is claimed that many of Mayer's drawings do not have documentary value for architectural historians. Many of his drawings are considered unreliable because of the objective errors they contain, and some are seen ascapriccio. In addition to the many physical difficulties faced by the artists of the period, although the reproduction conditions and quantities of the paintings overshadow the precision value of the drawings, it can be thought that Mayer's mistakes stem from the way he relates to the past. In this paper, the effects of the artist's being a student of Piranesi (1720-1778) or his experiences in the baroque buildings that he contributed to the construction in Sicily on his painting of the eastern geography will be examined.

Thomas Allom (1804-1872), who was working as an architectural perspectivist and topographic illus... more Thomas Allom (1804-1872), who was working as an architectural perspectivist and topographic illustrator at Francis Goodwin's workshop, receives a job offer from someone who saw his drawings at a publishing house. The offer comes from Fisher, Son & Co., a competitor of George Virtue. Allom's task is to illustrate albums. After producing various works that required him to travel around England, in 1837 Fisher assigns him to a project that involves overseas travelling for the first time. His task is to draw sketches in Turkey for a book entitled Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. The second big project Allom contributed to was an album entitled China in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architecture and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire, published in 1843. Thanks to his extensive preparation, he did not have to travel to China for this album. Consulting the works of other painters and travelers who have travelled to China before, and taking advantage of the perspective that an album is expected to present, Allom managed to produce the images he intended.
