ABSTRACT Experimental tests highlight that transparent films used for thermal control in windows ... more ABSTRACT Experimental tests highlight that transparent films used for thermal control in windows can be successfully adopted to obtain electromagnetic shielding in the radio frequency range. New multifunctional sandwich-structures consisting of commercial films over a glass layer are investigated. Electromagnetic, optical, and thermal performances are predicted and optimized by using the developed simulation codes. Numerical and measured frequency spectra of the shielding effectiveness and optical transmittance of the realized multilayer structures are shown.
A nanostructured transparent metal including silver layers is proposed for combined electromagnet... more A nanostructured transparent metal including silver layers is proposed for combined electromagnetic shielding and thermal deicing of aircraft windows. The electromagnetic, optical and thermal performances of the transparent coating are predicted considering a 0.5 m2 forward windscreen made of a laminated assembly including interlayer material plies. The proposed coating provides shielding effectiveness up to 40 dB in the radio frequency range, optical transmittance up to 70% and attenuation of the infrared radiation around 95 %. The power dissipated by the silver film allows obtaining the face ply temperature of 1 °C with external temperature of – 30 °C.

The hypotheses of electrically short planar structure and large cavity are assumed. Applications of the proposed procedure are carried out to the window of a building and of a transportation aircraft. Measured and computed spectra of the shielding effectiveness and optical transmittance are presented in the radio frequency range.
