Resveratrol is a phytoalexin that confers overall health benefits including positive regulation i... more Resveratrol is a phytoalexin that confers overall health benefits including positive regulation in brain function such as learning and cognition. However, whether and how resveratrol affects synaptic activity remains largely unknown. α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors (AMPARs) are glutamatergic receptors that mediate the majority of fast excitatory transmission and synaptic plasticity, and thus play a critical role in higher brain functions, including learning and memory. We find that in rat primary neurons, resveratrol can rapidly increase AMPAR protein level, AMPAR synaptic accumulation and the strength of excitatory synaptic transmission. The resveratrol effect on AMPAR protein expression is independent of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), the conventional downstream target of resveratrol, but rather is mediated by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and subsequent downstream phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling. Experimental study using LHbeta-Tag transgenic mice in a randomized controlled trial. Thirty-three 10-week-old LHbeta-Tag transgenic mice: 22 carboplatin-treated animals and 11 control animals. Three groups of 11 mice were treated with a single, 30 microl injection of fibrin sealant in the subconjunctival space of 1 eye; the opposite eye was left untreated as an internal control. Group 1 (low-dose group) received 37.5 mg/ml calculated concentration of carboplatin in fibrin sealant (0.66 mg measured total dose). Group 2 (high-dose group) received 75 mg/ml calculated concentration of carboplatin in fibrin sealant (1.23 mg measured total dose). Group 3 (control group) received fibrin sealant only. To determine the specificity of neuroendocrine protein gene product (PGP9.5) gene transcripts for... more To determine the specificity of neuroendocrine protein gene product (PGP9.5) gene transcripts for detecting micrometastatic neuroblastoma, we have used a highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique to evaluate expression of this gene in normal blood and bone marrow. While expression of the tyrosine hydroxylase gene was not detected in any normal sample, low-level PGP9.5 expression was detected in eight out of ten blood and seven of 12 marrow samples. PGP9.5 gene transcripts in normal tissues have the potential to interfere with the detection of micrometastatic neuroblastoma.

This Expert Consensus Document is the result of a 1-day meeting convened by Safe Kids Worldwide, the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation, and the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. The goal is to highlight knowledge gaps and areas of critically needed research in the areas of concussion science, dementia, genetics, diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, neuroimaging, sports injury surveillance, and information sharing. For each of these areas, we propose clear and achievable paths to improve the understanding, treatment and prevention of youth sports-related concussions.

ABSTRACT WEAVE is the next-generation wide-field optical spectroscopy facility for the William He... more ABSTRACT WEAVE is the next-generation wide-field optical spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) in La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. It is a multi-object "pick and place" fibre fed spectrograph with more than one thousand fibres behind a new dedicated 2° prime focus corrector, This is similar in concept to the Australian Astronomical Observatory's 2dF instrument1 with two observing plates, one of which is observing the sky while other is being reconfigured by a robotic fibre positioner. It will be capable of acquiring more than 10000 star or galaxy spectra a night. The WEAVE positioner concept uses two robots working in tandem in order to reconfigure a fully populated field within the expected 1 hour dwell-time for the instrument (a good match between the required exposure times and the limit of validity for a given configuration due to the effects of differential refraction).
