This study examined the relationship between individual behavior and leader emergence over the co... more This study examined the relationship between individual behavior and leader emergence over the course of a group’s development. Results indicated that behaviors related to leader emergence changed over time. Social behaviors were most strongly associated with leader emergence during the beginning of the project, while task behaviors were most strongly associated with leader emergence during later phases. These findings suggest that groups require primarily social-oriented leadership early on; however, needs shift during later phases to task-oriented leadership. The role of talkativeness in leader emergence was also examined and significantly interacted with task-oriented behaviors to predict leader emergence.

Do people of color report and perceive that SH complaints are taken seriously by their organization? Based on the notion of double jeopardy, that various factors of identity have a multiplicative effect on experienced discrimination, it is expected that minority members are more likely to experience SH and less likely to report, and if they report, they will perceive that SH complaints will not be seriously addressed (Berdahl & Moore, 2006). There is a growing social justice movement in the United States in response to perceptions of inc... more There is a growing social justice movement in the United States in response to perceptions of increasing inequality, as illustrated by recent minimum wage protests and the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is an open question, however, as to whether the accuracy of business students' knowledge of social justice issues in the United States affects student attitudes. We empirically examine whether the social justice knowledge deficits of management students affect student social and economic justice perceptions. Data were collected from business students (n = 222) at an AACSB-accredited business school at a comprehensive state university. Results indicate that students who are less accurate regarding where the United States ranks in reference to its OECD peers on social justice issues perceive current social justice policy and practice as more equitable, have lower levels of agreement with the goals of the Occupy Wall Street social justice movement, and are more likely to endorse GNP as an effective measure of a society's progress.

This study investigated the relationship between an individual’s religious beliefs, conscientious... more This study investigated the relationship between an individual’s religious beliefs, conscientiousness, and ethical development. A survey was given to 250 business and psychology students at a mid‐sized university in the southeastern United States that included questions pertaining to ethics, conscientiousness, and the students’ beliefs about God based on the Baylor Institute Typology. Our findings indicate that God Image had significant but differential effects on conscientiousness and ethical development. Recognition of these important relationships may assist managers in developing an improved understanding of values, attitudes, and resulting behaviors of employees in the workplace, and may present opportunities for organizational interventions to improve employee and team performance.

Data were collected from Millennial students ( n = 536) and faculty at an AACSB-accredited comprehensive state university. Results indicate that the current generation of college students has significantly higher levels of narcissism than college students of the past, business students possess significantly higher levels of narcissism than psychology students, narcissism does not have a significant (positive or negative) relationship with business school classroom outcomes, and narcissists expect to have significantly more career success in terms of ease of finding a job, salary, and promotions. Data were collected from business students ( n = 405) at an Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business–accredited business school at a comprehensive state university. Results indicate that narcissism has an indirect effect on business students’ environmental ethics. Narcissism was significantly related to materialism, and materialism was significantly related to lower levels of environmental ethics. Considering increasing levels of narcissism among business students, we discuss the potential for future research and potential intervention strategies.

However, little research has been done to determine what leads to this type of conflict. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine in more detail the underlying causes of socio-emotional conflict among team members from a person-perception perspective. A round-robin design and D. Kenny's (1994) social relations model (SRM) were used to examine the extent to which perceptions of socio-emotional conflict stem from individual versus relational factors. Moreover, several individual difference variables were examined to investigate who is most likely to perceive conflict with others, and who is most likely to be seen as causing conflict. The current study integrates self-enhancement and social exchange theories to construct hypothese... more The current study integrates self-enhancement and social exchange theories to construct hypotheses in which team-level narcissism is expected to negatively influence team-level task performance ratings and team-level organizational citizenship behaviors directed at team members (OCB-Is). Additionally, individual-level narcissism is expected to negatively influence peer performance ratings. Based on longitudinal data collected from 89 study participants constituting 29 project teams, results indicate (a) team-level narcissism influences task performance, (b) team-level narcissism influences changes in OCB-Is over time, and (c) individual-level narcissism influences peer performance ratings. Our findings suggest the necessity for practitioners to consider individual differences in the strategic formation of work groups.

We examined the relationship between personality congruence on faculty and student narcissism wit... more We examined the relationship between personality congruence on faculty and student narcissism with student perceptions of professor status, the perceived difficulty of the class, and student performance in the classroom. Data were collected from business students and faculty at an AACSB-accredited business school at a comprehensive state university. Results indicated that narcissism congruence was significantly related to a student's final grade in the class such that less congruence was associated with lower course grades and that this negative association was partially mediated by perceived professor status and perceived class difficulty. Particularly concerning was the finding that more narcissistic faculty were associated with detrimental outcomes for less narcissistic students. Considering the well-documented and profoundly negative implications of narcissism for workplace environments, this finding suggests a need for future research on the impact of narcissistic faculty on business students and on successful intervention strategies.
