One of the conclusions drawn from this survey is that the majority of assembly features involve sets of spatially adjacent faces. Two principle types of adjacency relationships are identified and an algorithm is presented for identifying assembly features, these are features which arise from these “spatial” and “contact” face adjacency relationships (known as s- and c-adjacency respectively). The algorithm uses an octree representation of a B-rep model to support the geometric reasoning required to locate assembly features on disjoint bodies. Once all the adjacent faces which form features have been located, they are used to partition the original faces of the assembly into adjacent and non-adjacent portions. The resulting system can locate and partition spatially adjacent faces in a wide range of situations and at different resolutions. By way of illustration, the algorithm is applied to a trial component.

Given this context, it is not surprising that the vision of a “Google for shape”, which enables engineers to search databases of 3D models for components similar in shape to a query part, has motivated numerous researchers to investigate algorithms for computing geometric similarity. Measuring the effectiveness of the many approaches proposed has in turn lead to the creation of benchmark datasets against which researchers can compare the performance of their search engines. Recent research has produced a suite of powerful generic algorithms for identifying features on s... more Recent research has produced a suite of powerful generic algorithms for identifying features on solid models, and after further refinement they are now capable of analysing the geometry of complex engineering components. In addition, a graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed for human-computer interaction. The main algorithm has also been embedded in a commercially available computer aided manufacturing (CAM) package which assists the manufacturing engineer in the production of NC code for machine-tools. A second application for the feature recognition engine is now being investigated, namely that of interaction with co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) technology. Recent research has indicated that comparing a manufactured component (or batch of components) with a computer generated solid model gives a quick and highly accurate set of deviation data. T... more This paper describes the functionality of a Feature Recognition system, known as FeatureFinder. The system’s algorithm has been developed from a graph-based approach to feature recognition and is now capable of identifying a variety of features on a wide range of machined components. The system has been designed to be used within a solids machining package and identifies features from a specified tool approach direction. The paper details the result of applying the algorithm to the CIE97 test pieces. Features are identified on all of the components and the paper concludes with a brief description of on-going work designed to extend the range of components FeatureFinder’s algorithm can analyse.

Previous work of the authors (Corney, 1993) has been extended to allow the recognition of closed ... more Previous work of the authors (Corney, 1993) has been extended to allow the recognition of closed depression and protrusion features on components containing cylindrical faces. The aim is to automate the creation of volumes which need to be cleared from a stock body in order to manufacture a component. The original algorithm was inefficient because geometric interrogations on complex components were repeated and a large amount of backtracking was required. In the new approach the interrogations are performed prior to the search algorithm. The recognition algorithm will eventually be extended to detect open features and to handle multi-sided components. The theory in this paper pertains only to single-sided, 2½-dimensional components.

However the proliferation of web based catalogues for standard components (e.g. brochure-ware for nuts and washers etc.) only hints at the possible productivity gains if a 3D search engine could be created. Consequently the research reported here is motivated by the belief that shape matching technology is key to enabling a much deeper form of Internet-based collaborative commerce. This paper describes the coarse “shape” filters that support a 3D, Internet-based search engine, known as ShapeSifter, whose ultimate aim is to enable the location of parts already in production that have a shape similar to a desired “newly designed” part.
