A two-stage low noise amplifier module for the 35.5 - 36.5 GHz band has been designed and develop... more A two-stage low noise amplifier module for the 35.5 - 36.5 GHz band has been designed and developed. The amplifier is based on a conventional high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) with 0.25 um gate length. An equivalent circuit model for this device was derived from measuraments up to 18 GHz. The amplifier module has been implemented in a hybrid form on 0.254 mm AI2O3 substrate. A noise figure of 2.9 dB with an associated gain of 6.8 dB (coax to microstrip transitions loss included) have been measured at 35.8 GHz. In-band flatness is better than ± 0.15 dB for noise figure and ± 0.5 dB for associated gain.

Alfred North Whitehead (1861\u20131947) was a prominent multidisciplinary figure, whose intellect... more Alfred North Whitehead (1861\u20131947) was a prominent multidisciplinary figure, whose intellectual interests extended over mathematics, philosophy of science, history of science, education, religion, and metaphysics. The common thread to be found in Whitehead\u2019s work across diversified disciplines is his quest for universal connectedness, which can be found in all his theoretical frameworks. In mathematics, Whitehead pursued a generalized theoretical framework based on symbolic logic, along with Bertrand Russell. In the philosophy of science, Whitehead stated that for a natural phenomenon to exist, space and time must enable interconnection, without falling into the trap of ideal point-like abstractions, and hence of scientific materialism. In the philosophy of education, Whitehead proposed the development of interwoven literary, scientific, and technical curricula, all pointing to the single ultimate subject: life. In religion, Whitehead saw God as both primordial and consequent, giving original input to the process of organic evolution of the universe and then judging its development with benevolence. In metaphysics, Whitehead elected creativity as the ultimate principle, which brings together the multitude of the many into the uniqueness of the ever-transforming one. Importance and expression are, respectively, defined by Whitehead in view of their immanence of the infinitude into the finite and of the finitude into the infinite. Process philosophy is arguably Whitehead\u2019s main contribution, positing a cosmological view on the universe dominated by creativity, potentiality, possibility, connectedness, and teleological value. Whitehead\u2019s legacy is finally briefly discussed with reference to theology, eastern philosophy, quantum physics, sociology, and creativity studies

One of the major advantages of a code division multiple access (CDMA) system is the flexibility i... more One of the major advantages of a code division multiple access (CDMA) system is the flexibility in frequency assignment, which allows all the users to share the same frequency band and, possibly, to partially overlay the spectrum allocation of different services. However, before synchronism to the desired sequence is achieved, the presence of multiple access interference (MAI) is a major impairment which determines the performance of the code acquisition sub-system. It has been argued that the acquisition performance in the presence of MAI may pose limits to the capacity of a CDMA system which are more stringent than those coming from bit error probability specifications. We introduce a general definition for acquisition-based capacity of a CDMA system. This quantity is evaluated for an acquisition sub-system with non-coherent correlator/detector and straight serial search in the time uncertainty region. The effect of imperfect power control is also analysed, showing that the capacity may be substantially decreased when the residual standard deviation of the received power level is above 1 dB

While there is a current tendency to believe that the correct answer for the educational system is the introduction of computational thinking as a subject for all, we maintain that this set of skills will not be sufficient, and indeed not the most important one. Our well-being from both psychological and social points of view, as well as the preservation of our specific role in the economy, will depend on the development of the specifically human traits and abilities related to organic creativity.

The paper introduces a statistical channel model which is a combination of Rice and lognormal sta... more The paper introduces a statistical channel model which is a combination of Rice and lognormal statistics, and is suitable in principle to all types of environment (rural, subur- ban, urban) simply by tuning the model parameters. The model validity is confirmed by comparisons with measurement data collected in the literature. Empirical formulas are derived for the model parameters to fit measured data over a wide range of elevation angles. In particular, the model is applied to non- geostationary satellite channels, such as low-Earth orbit and medium-Earth orbit channels, in which for a given user located in a generic site the elevation angle changes continuously. Fi- nally, examples of average bit error probability evaluations in the channel are provided.

Jammers pose a threat to the reliability of satellite navigation systems. The vast majority of th... more Jammers pose a threat to the reliability of satellite navigation systems. The vast majority of these devices generate broadband interference by rapidly sweeping wide bandwidths with continuous waves. Their waveforms fall into the set of nonstationary signals that can be conveniently analysed through timefrequency transforms. Based on a novel use of the S-transform, the present paper describes a framework for estimating the modulation characteristics of multiple jammers and therewith the respective locations. The performance are evaluated by means of numerical simulations for two jammers. When the jamming waveforms are well characterized, the locations of their sources can be estimated by trilateration with accuracies below ten meters within a square area of side of one kilometre.

This paper addresses the problem of primary code acquisition for the Galileo E1 signal in challen... more This paper addresses the problem of primary code acquisition for the Galileo E1 signal in challenging environments. The detector sensitivity is augmented by extending the observation window up to several primary code periods. A novel solution is proposed to cope with the secondary code ambiguity, based on the enumeration of all possible secondary chips sign combinations and exploiting an optimized parallel architecture. Performance is presented in terms of Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) and Mean Acquisition Time (MAT), obtained through simulation and analytical results. The paper shows that the proposed scheme is able to introduce an interesting improvement, limiting at the same the complexity increase.
