Our purpose was to determine the relationship between the oxidative stress and the inflammatory cytokines and to investigate how melatonin affects oxidative damage and cytokine response in thyrotoxic rats. Twenty-one rats were divided into three groups. Group A served as negative controls. Group B had untreated thyrotoxicosis, and Group C received melatonin. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and nitric oxide derivates (Nx), and plasma IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-alpha were measured. MDA, GSH, Nx, IL-10, and TNF-alpha levels increased after L-thyroxine induction. An inhibition of triiodothyronine and thyroxine was detected, as a result of melatonin administration. The effects of antioxidant vitamin E treatment on the liver and stomach in cirrhotic rats were examined. Fifty rats were divided into three groups. Cirrhosis was induced by bile duct ligation in 40 of 50 rats. Controls underwent a sham operation. Gastric mucosal lesions were produced by intragastric administration of 1 mL of 95% ethanol in all three groups. The surrogate indicating biomarkers in patients with CRSwNP need further evaluation. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and amphiregulin (AREG) cytokines in patients with CRSwNP.MethodsSinonasal tissue samples were collected from 33 patients with CRSwNP and 29 controls. Levels of AREG, IL-19, IL-21, IL-25, IL-33 and TSLP in nasal polyp and control sinonasal tissues were determined following the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method.ResultsWe found that AREG, IL-19, IL-21, IL-25, IL-33 and TSLP levels were significantly higher in the CRSwNP group compared to the control group (p < 0.000; p < 0.000; p < 0.000; p < 0.000; p < 0.003; p < 0.021, respectively).ConclusionsOur findings indicated that AREG, IL-19, IL-21, IL-25, IL-33 and TSLP were significantly increased in tissue samples of CRSwNP patients and may be considered as molecular indicators and targets for therapeutic developments for patients with CRSwNP.
We proposed to assess antioxidant status and nitric oxide in fibromyalgia (FM) patients in compar... more We proposed to assess antioxidant status and nitric oxide in fibromyalgia (FM) patients in comparison to healthy controls. Additionally, the association between the serum antioxidant levels and clinical findings in FM patients was also investigated. Thirty-seven FM patients and 37 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Severity of fatigue and pain were determined by Visual Analogue Scale. Functional capacity in daily living activities was evaluated by fibromyalgia impact questionnaire. Serum NO, catalase and glutathione were measured. Serum glutathione and catalase levels were significantly lower in FM patients than controls. However, no significant difference was seen in serum NO levels between the two groups. A significant correlation was evident between serum NO level and pain. Additionally, the correlation between glutathione level and morning stiffness was found to be significant. These findings support other studies, we assume that these two antioxidants might have impact on the pathogenesis of FM disease.

The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between TcB measurement, as performed using BiliCheck, and TSB, measured with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and with standard laboratory methods, and to determine the TcB cutoff points with desirable sensitivity and specificity values for various clinically relevant TSB levels by HPLC. Fifty-four infants of > or = 30 weeks of gestational age were enrolled in the study. Near simultaneous blood collection for TSB analysis by three methods--bedside bilirubinometer, diazo method and HPLC--and TcB measurement were performed.
