Quantitative intensity and line broadening studies on CF4 and their application to modeling the l... more Quantitative intensity and line broadening studies on CF4 and their application to modeling the laser gain is presented. First, absorption measurements on isolated lines in the v sub 2 + v sub 4 pump band at a series of pressures yield an effective transition dipole moment for this band of 0.010 Debye. At the same time the transition moment for the v sub 2 + v sub 4 - v sub 2 laser band are calculated and agrees well with the results of laser self-absorption measurements. Finally, linewidths determined as a function of pressure yield a pressure broadening coefficient of ca, 10 MHz/torr, significantly greater than that expected from a hard sphere gas kinetic model. From these data the gain of the CF4 laser are calculated at various pressures and temperatures; the results are in reasonable agreement with measured values.

Spectra of the 3nu3 region of 238UF6 near 1875.5 cm-1 have been obtained at 256 K with path lengt... more Spectra of the 3nu3 region of 238UF6 near 1875.5 cm-1 have been obtained at 256 K with path lengths up to 400 m using tunable semiconductor diode lasers. Seventeen features have been assigned to 27 Q-branch fine-structure levels, and five molecular parameters have been derived. Two of these refer to vibration-rotation interaction and agree well with earlier values determined from the nu3 fundamental band. The remaining three constants are pure vibrational. They, along with information from the nu3 fundamental, determine the excited vibrational structures of the nnu3 overtones, to the second order of approximation in the formalism of Hecht. These structures are consistent with strong localization of the three individual components of the triply degenerate nu3 mode of vibration. Comparisons are made with the two-photon spectrum of Harzer, Schweizer, and Selter, and with the bond-stretching model of Halonen and Child.

ABSTRACT The two infrared-active vibrational bands of the 3ν3 manifold of SF6 have been recorded ... more ABSTRACT The two infrared-active vibrational bands of the 3ν3 manifold of SF6 have been recorded at T = 160 K with near Doppler-limited resolution using a tunable laser difference-frequency spectrometer. Most of the principal structure has been identified, and over 700 lines with J ≤ 33 have been fitted with a model Hamiltonian which allows the l = 1 and l = 3 subbands to interact. The analysis yields the values of ten spectroscopic constants. When earlier results for the ν3 band are considered, the values of eight additional constants are derived. The effective harmonic frequency, ω30, and the three anharmonic coefficients X33, G33, and T33, have been determined with high precision, so that the vibrational levels in the nν3 ladder can be predicted accurately for several values of n. The Cartesian basis (n3x, n3y, n3z) is found to be the best representation for the vibrational sublevels. Analysis of the rovibrational line strengths reveals that the weak (2, 1, 0) band of 3ν3 has a very small intrinsic dipole transition moment, so that this band derives most of its intensity by "borrowing" from the strong (3, 0, 0) band.
