As we wrap up the second quarter of school, I like to take the time to talk with the students about the skills and abilities that I expect to improve and grow as we work our way through the school...

Elements of the Art Room | Elementary art, Elementary art projects, 5th grade art

4th Grade created these colorful artworks by using oil pastels and erasers! This lesson was inspired by The Art of Ed blog, and was a hit! Here's how we did it, but you can also check out the Art of Ed's blog for more details! They each chose a shape, traced around that shape, and colored them in with oil pastels. We like to use Crayola oil pastels the best! After they finished filling the paper up with color, they took the eraser, started in the middle, and drug the color outwards, creating…

fun space art | Elementary art, Art lessons elementary, 4th grade art

I have done this lesson many times, but this year the results are better than ever before. This year, we had more time to do this project, and therefore their drawings had more detail. This lesson focuses on the concept of foreshortening. This is a hard concept for even experienced artists, so to make it simpler, we traced our hands and feet. The other details were drawn in after. I found the idea for this lesson years ago on the blog Oodles of Art. Over the years, I have adapted this…

Dandelion Puffs: Kids Art Project

For our last project of the Art Room year, I was looking for a quick and easy project that could be completed in one 90-minute class, and which would touch on some of the techniques and skills we learned this past year. I opted for this cute, easy and pretty much fool-proof dandelion project. It incorporates pen and line techniques, illustration, and watercolor techniques.... all things my 6-7 year old age group covered this year. We began by looking at simple illustrations of dandelions. We…

Warm and Cool Hands-- Third Grade Art | Color art lessons, 3rd grade art, Elementary art

Third grade used warm and cool colors and pattern to create these tempera paintings. The students viewed artwork by native people and how their hand print was not only a record of who they were or where they had traveled, but also a way to sign their art. The students each used their hand prints to sign their paintings. Notice how the warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) advance and the cool colors (blue, green, and violet) recede? This color effect creates an optical illusion. The boys and…
