Appearance

Depending on the other breed they are mixed with, short haired huskies will likely be quite similar to a standard husky breed in appearance. Aside from the difference in hair length, many of these dogs will take after the husky’s predominant features.

Color

As mentioned, short haired huskies will likely look much like the standard husky breed, though it does vary depending on their mixed breed. Huskies are typically colors like black and white, red and white, gray and white, and variations of many of those colors. A short haired husky can have either blue or brown eyes or one of each.

Coat & Shedding

According to widely agreed upon breed standards, Siberian Huskies are expected to have fur that is thick and medium in length. As puppies, huskies do have a shorter coat, but eventually, it grows into their famous thick and fluffy coat.

That being said, though, there are various mixed husky breeds that can have short coats! For example, a husky and lab mix, a husky and Dalmatian mix, or a husky and pit bull mix could all be expected to have shorter coats if they take after the non-husky parent more.

Are short haired huskies hypoallergenic?

Unfortunately, no, they are not hypoallergenic. No husky or husky mix could ever be considered truly hypoallergenic. No matter if the hair is long like the wooly husky or medium length like the standard husky, or short like short haired husky mixes, these dogs will still produce dander and shed.

That being said, though, short haired huskies’ shedding may not be as bothersome to some people with allergies because the hair is significantly shorter and may not cause as much irritation.

Size

Huskies are medium sized dogs and typically weigh between 35 and 60 pounds. Depending on the parents, a short haired husky would likely fall somewhere in that same weight range.

Temperament & Personality

Siberian Huskies are known for their friendly and outgoing temperament. They are also very intelligent and independent, which can make them a bit challenging to train, but with proper socialization and positive reinforcement, they can make excellent companions. They also have a mischievous, playful nature and love to have fun.

Lifespan

A husky’s lifespan is typically expected to be somewhere between twelve and fourteen years. Other factors like mixed breeds, genetics, and nutrition can also play a role in their longevity.

Intelligence

Huskies are known for being intelligent dogs. They are also known for their problem-solving abilities, independence, and adaptability.

Activity Level

Huskies are extremely active dogs. They require a lot of physical exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. They also benefit from regular opportunities to engage in activities that challenge their minds, such as training sessions or puzzle toys.

Good with Kids?

Huskies and most husky mixes are generally quite good with children. They love to play and have fun. But because they are so energetic, families with young children will need to focus on teaching their husky to slow down around the little ones.

Speed/Strength/Endurance

Huskies are fast, strong, and have impressive endurance. They can run up to 30 mph, have powerful muscles, and are capable of traveling long distances for hours on end due to their endurance and athleticism.

Behavior

Huskies are mostly well-behaved dogs, but they do have quite a bit of energy.

Because of this, they can easily find themselves in a spot of trouble if they don’t have enough activity and exercise throughout the day.

History & Origin

The Siberian Husky breed is believed to be some 4,000 years old! They come from northern Siberian and were originally bred by the Chukchi people as sled dogs.

Purebred Siberian Huskies don’t have short hair, but short haired huskies have come to exist due to breeding occurring with other dog breeds with shorter coats.

Short haired huskies are unlikely to be used as sledding dogs. Their short coat length wouldn’t be able to tolerate the cold as well.

How to Take Care of a Short Haired Husky

Nutrition

Huskies are athletic dogs and, as such, require a nutritious diet to keep their bodies healthy and in good shape. A diet high in protein will be key for huskies.

Exercise

A typical adult Siberian husky requires at least sixty minutes of vigorous exercise every day, such as running, hiking, or playing fetch.

Grooming

Though their coat may be shorter, short haired huskies still shed quite a bit. Because of this, they need regular grooming. It’s typically best to get into the habit of brushing your dog at least two times a week. This will help reduce shedding.

For a short haired husky, a rubber curry or bristle brush will often be the best brush for a husky as it will help loosen and brush away those short hairs.

Training

While huskies are very smart, they can be difficult to train due to their independent nature combined with some stubborn tendencies. Finding a reward like a treat or a toy that your husky is willing to work for will be a key part of training.

Puppies

Husky puppies can be a lot of work, but they are a lot of fun, too! Start basic training early on. Some of the most important things to teach your husky puppy will be to come when called and to drop it or leave it! You’ll probably use those commands a lot with a husky!

General Health

Huskies are a healthy dog breed, and depending on what breed a short-haired husky is mixed with, they can live long, healthy lives.

Nutrition and exercise will be important in keeping them in good condition.

Breeding Short Haired Huskies

Short haired huskies are not very common and are usually the result of breeding occurring between a husky and a short haired breed of dog. There may be some breeders who do this, but most often, short haired huskies are the result of an accidental litter.

Short Haired Husky Price

Because short haired huskies are typically the result of accidental litters and not bred by dedicated breeders, the price will likely fall somewhere at the lower end of dog prices. Likely between 200 and 600 dollars.

Why are you looking for a short hair husky?

Let us know your reasons in the comments below.

Are huskies long or short haired?

It depends! Husky puppies will have short hair. However, as a purebred husky grows up, they will become medium to long haired. On the other hand, husky mixes where the non-husky parent has short hair can be classified as short haired huskies.

Why does my husky have short hair?

If your husky has short hair, it’s because they are still a puppy or because they aren’t a pure husky breed.
