The Central Council of the GAA has proposed that changes to the All-Ireland SFC not take place until 2026.

After a meeting in Croke Park today delegates voted for a new system (Option 1) to be put before Congress but that it would not come into effect until 2026. The new system would see an enhanced qualifier system with the current group stages removed.

Additionally, the pre-season football competitions - the McKenna, O’Byrne, McGrath Cups and Connacht FL - have been suspended in 2025.

It was also decided that no motion would be put forward for a third football tier, below the Tailteann Cup, at this stage.

The controversy over the All-Ireland SHC quarter-finals being played on a Saturday was also addressed. The CCCC will decide which of the Tailteann Cup or Hurling Quarter finals should be on a Sunday and Hurling League final (Saturday or Sunday at CCCCs discretion).

Central Council has also backed the replays in provincial and All-Ireland finals after extra time from 2026 if the new SFC format is agreed.
