We introduced some methods to port our Global Nested Air Quality Prediction Modeling System (GNAQPMS) model on Intel Knight Landing (KNL). In this paper, we introduced both common and specific methods to accelerate out model better. With the guidance of the resources material on Intel Websites (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/processors/xeon-phi.html) and relative books, this paper could be an example for the model developers to take advantage of KNL for their model.

To derive the air temperature in mountain enviroments, we propose a new downscaling method with a spatially variable magnitude of surface effects. Our findings suggest that the difference between near-surface air temperature and upper-air temerpature is a good proxy of surface effects. It can be used to improve downscaling results, especially in valleys with strong surface effects and cold air pooling during winter.

An update to an ocean modelling configuration for the European North West Shelf is described. It is assessed against observations and climatologies for 1981–2012. Sensitivities in the model configuration updates are assessed to understand changes in the model system. The model improves upon an existing model of the region, although there remain some areas with significant biases. The paper highlights the dependence upon the quality of the river inputs.

The Environment – HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model (Enviro-HIRLAM) is developed as a fully online integrated numerical weather prediction and atmospheric chemical transport model for research and forecasting of joint meteorological, chemical and biological weather. Different aspects of online coupling methodology, research strategy and possible applications of the modelling system, and ''fit-for-purpose'' model configurations for the meteorological and air quality communities are discussed.

To discretise and transfer a landscape into a hydrological model, many different algorithms and software implementations exist. These are, however, often model specific, commercial, and allow for only a limited workflow automation. Overcoming these limitations, the software package lumpR was developed. It employs an hillslope-based discretisation algorithm directed at large-scale application. The software is demonstrated in a case study and crucial discretisation parameters are investigated.

The TOMCAT chemical transport model has been updated with the chemical degradation of ethene, propene, toluene, butane and monoterpenes. The tropospheric chemical mechanism is documented and the model is evaluated against surface, balloon, aircraft and satellite data. The model is generally able to capture the main spatial and seasonal features of carbon monoxide, ozone, volatile organic compounds and reactive nitrogen. However, some model biases are found that require further investigation.

Various sensitivity simulations during two airborne campaigns were performed to assess the impact of different initialization methods and model resolutions on NUWRF-modeled weather states, heat fluxes, and the follow-on MEGAN isoprene emission calculations. Proper land initialization is shown to be important to the coupled weather modeling and the follow-on emission modeling, which is also critical to accurately representing other processes in air quality modeling and data assimilation.

The Baltic Sea is seasonally ice covered with intense wintertime ship traffic and a sensitive ecosystem. Understanding the sea-ice pack is important for climate effect studies and forecasting. A NEMO-LIM3.6-based model setup for the North Sea/Baltic Sea is introduced, including a method for ice in the coastal zone. We evaluate different sea-ice parameters and overall find that the model agrees well with the observation though deformed ice is more challenging to capture.

This study presents the implementation of stable water isotopes in the MITgcm and describes the results of an equilibrium simulation under pre-industrial conditions. The model compares well to observational data and measurements of plankton tow records and thus opens wide prospects for long-term simulations in a paleoclimatic context.

MicroHH (www.microhh.org) is a new and open-source computational fluid dynamics code for the simulation of turbulent flows in the atmosphere. It is made to simulate atmospheric flows up to the finest detail levels at very high resolution. It has been designed from scratch in C++ in order to use a modern design that allows the code to run on more than 10 000 cores, as well as on a graphical processing unit.

Researchers from the Netherlands present OMUSE, a software package developed from core technology originating in the astrophysical community. Using OMUSE, oceanographic and climate researchers can develop numerical models of the ocean and the interactions between different parts of the ocean and the atmosphere. This provides a novel way to investigate, for example, the local effects of climate change on the ocean. OMUSE is freely available as open-source software.
