Brilliant encouragement

Posted : 17 years, 8 months ago on 20 March 2007 03:16 (A review of Sent by Jesus)

This book needs to be required reading for all Christian ministers and those in ministry training - a fantastic book on what "Christian ministry" is, and a helpful corrective on what it isn't.

Must read!

Overall fantastic, but some parts...

Posted : 17 years, 8 months ago on 20 March 2007 03:14 (A review of God Is the Gospel: Meditations on God's Love as the Gift of Himself)

I really enjoyed this book. Piper's "theocentricity" is a great corrector for much of modern evangelicalism's anthro-centric theology and practice.

However, at times Piper "over steps" the mark, saying things that will make fragile believers think of themselves as unconverted.

Amazing film, but not one to watch with

Posted : 18 years, 5 months ago on 12 July 2006 06:22 (A review of The Proposition)

This is an incredibly made film and has a compelling story line. However with many misanthropic characters, it's not the nicest film to watch.

An interesting read

Posted : 18 years, 5 months ago on 6 July 2006 02:13 (A review of Her Hand in Marriage: Biblical Courtship in the Modern World)

This book is well worth reading for every Christian - whether you're single or married. Its primary audience is fathers, but has something for everyone to ponder.

The big question left for me to ponder after reading this book is whether Wilson's application of the Mosaic law is appropriate for Christians.

Brilliant

Highly recommended for everyone - you never know when having read this moving story about suffering a chronic illness will be of use to you.

Why I like/dislike this book.

Posted : 18 years, 5 months ago on 16 June 2006 05:25 (A review of Search the Scriptures: 3v.in 1v)

This is the devotional that my wife and I use for reading the bible together.

Through using this book, the reader is lead through the bible (over the course of a few years) by reading sequential passages of scripture. Unlike many devotionals, this book does not have "toughts" or "reflections" on each passage, rather it has a few questions to help the reader to think about and apply the bible.

This devotional uses the "Day 1, Day 2" layout for readings which I prefer over the calendar days.

The disappointment I have with this book is that sometimes the questions are leading, and lead to conclusions that I disagree with/

Why I like/dislike this book.

Posted : 18 years, 5 months ago on 16 June 2006 05:18 (A review of For the Love of God Vol 1)

This devotional is what I'm currently using to aid my regular bible reading time. It is based on the famous McCheyne bible reading plan, with 4 daily bible readings. In this book, Carson chooses one of the personal readings to comment on. With such a renound preacher/teacher as Carson as our guide, this devotional leaves the reader in sound theological hands.

My only complaint with this devotional is that it uses calendar dates for the readings rather than a more flexible "Day 1, Day 2..." approach. However, due to the dearth of devotionals to warm both mind and soul - Carson's "For the Love of God" is essential for the evangelical's bookshelf.

How I got this CD

Posted : 18 years, 5 months ago on 16 June 2006 04:16 (A review of Summerteeth)

I won this CD in 1999 at the UQ Inter-College bandfest. My copy has a few scratches, but it is THE cd that introduced me to Wilco.

A must read

Posted : 18 years, 5 months ago on 16 June 2006 04:03 (A review of Pure Sex)

In this book, Jensen and Payne do a great job looking at the "sexual revolution" - right back through the 1800's. They then look at the bible and argue that true sexual fulfillment can only be found through Christ.
