Highlights of 2016

January

On a cold January morning in London my wife and I hopped on the Central Line and headed to South Woodford for breakfast at Cafe on the Lane. This turned out to be a very wise decision, the breakfast here is excellent and comes at a very reasonable price. Best of all though they serve some really nice slabs of bubble and squeak, definitely recommended!

February

In February I was about to start writing regular articles for a local Magazine but a disagreement over editing was enough for me to pull the plug on this arrangement. It seemed a shame to waste the article I'd written on my five favourite Norwich breakfasts though so I published it on my blog instead. The Norwich Evening News contacted me after I published it and offered to feature it as a full page spread on 26th February, it also made it onto their website

Jim Fennell from Salubrious Sauce Co in Woodbridge had sent me a bottle of their new breakfast sauce, it was delicious! It went incredibly well with a whole host of things ranging from steak to pasta, I was keen to try it on a breakfast though. Jeff Taylor at Pandora's Kitchen invited myself and Jim along to try the sauce on the Fry Up Inspector breakfast served at Pandora's, it was a match made in Heaven! Read about it here.

March

I'd been hearing good things about the breakfast at Rockers Cafe at Krazy Horse in Bury St Edmunds for sometime. In March I decided to head out there with my wife to see what all the fuss was about. For less than £8 they were serving a great all day breakfast which included toast and a hot drink, bargain!

April

In April we visited River Green Cafe in Trowse to try their vegetarian brunch. Chris Avey and his team had certainly created something very special. Good quality locally sourced ingredients and a delicious bubble and squeak made this vegetarian breakfast really stand out

May

The Rosebery in Norwich was May's breakfast highlight, less than £7 for their cooked breakfast seemed like a really good deal. The thing I remember most from this visit though was how envious I was of my wife's vegetarian breakfast, it tasted so good!

Towards the end of May my personal highlight of the year was when my wife and I returned to Japan again. We visited Hiroshima, Yokohama, Nagasaki, Tokyo and Kyoto, this time we were here for 3 weeks and I planned on documenting everything along the way.

June

I spent most of June writing about my time in Japan, I published a Japanese Food Adventure - Chapter 2 blog post everyday for 3 weeks. I needed another holiday afterwards!

I was going to have to wait a bit longer for another holiday. In the meantime though I did discover some delicious breakfast cups made by Logan's of Norwich, if you get the chance be sure to try one, they're exceptionally good!

July

Another holiday finally arrived in July, a trip to Barcelona to attend two music festivals. The urge to write about this trip was great but I resisted it and had a relaxing trip away just occasionally posting on Instagram.

With sushi and tapas fast becoming a distant memory I went on search for more great breakfasts. In mid July I visited Wroxham with my wife and we enjoyed a really nice breakfast at The River Kitchen. Located beside the river in Wroxham it's a beautiful place to enjoy a spot of breakfast.

Also in July a weekend in London resulted in finding some more great places to go for breakfast. Beppe's Cafe near Smithfield Market has been serving its customers since 1932, and is a firm favourite with its regulars. This classic London cafe serves a good honest breakfast for under a fiver, a recommended sticker was sent to them straight away!

The following morning we discovered Frizzante Cafe at Hackney City Farm. Their impressive breakfast featured locally sourced ingredients, homemade sausages and homemade beans. The friendly service and beautiful setting to enjoy a breakfast made it another recommended place to go for breakfast in London.

August

I was hearing lots of good things about the Gardener's breakfast at Green Pastures in Bergh Apton and I finally made the trip out there with my wife in August. Quality ingredients were used on this breakfast and the air dried bacon was superb! Another place was added to the Recommended section.

September

Not much really happened in September related to breakfasts, I did finally got around to trying a Voodoo Daddies pizza though. I ordered the beast (pictured above) and was really impressed, I usually find pizza's don't have enough toppings but with Voodoo Daddies the toppings are piled on thick. Within a week my wife and I went to The Plasterers pub in Norwich to try them again, sadly they were both overcooked. Voodoo Daddies were keen to put things right though and sent some more perfectly cooked pizzas out to us with a full refund. This is when I got to try the "Fat Elvis" pizza, the best pizza I've ever eaten!

October

Not so much a highlight of 2016 but more of a surprise when in October I went with my wife for breakfast at The Galway Roast in Norwich. Trying to cook a Full English breakfast in a microwave can lead to shocking results as we both found out! They closed for business a few days later, the microwaved egg I was served will haunt me forever though.

I love a Christmas sandwich so decided to try as many as I could when they started appearing in the shops in mid October. The best one up to the now seemed to be the M&S Turkey Feast, the Christmas build up was young though and the search continued...

The Street Cafe is one of my favourite places to go for breakfast in Norwich. With me being so busy searching for new places to review I don't go there as often as I'd like. In October I revisited and thoroughly enjoyed Andy's legendary full English served with Archers sausages, as always it looked and tasted perfect!

November

When I asked people on my facebook page where I should go for breakfast next time I'm in London the majority said Maggie's Cafe in Lewisham. I'm glad I asked as the £6.95 create your own breakfast I ate there in November was such good value for money. Maggie and her team were the perfect hosts and this place was clearly very popular. The drinks were constantly being topped up and choosing from over 20 breakfast items meant you could create something really special.

Throughout November I kept searching for the ultimate Christmas Sandwich. When Pret A Manger released their range on the 8th November I found the clear winner so far with their Christmas Lunch sandwich, the veggie version was excellent too. I realised there must be some incredible Christmas sandwiches made by independents out there though so the search continued...

Towards the end of November Storm in a Teacup opened on Elm Hill in Norwich, I went along to check it out. Excellent service, a friendly welcome and a great Full English breakfast ensured they made it into the recommended section of the blog.

December

I couldn't resist trying the Christmas baguette from Urban Munch in Norwich, it was very messy to eat but tasted sublime! The baguette was packed with turkey breast, stuffing, sausages, onions, gravy and cranberry sauce. As I expected, the Christmas sandwiches offered by independents were by far the best bet

No trip to London in December is complete without going for Santa's Big Breakfast at Polo Bar opposite Liverpool Street Station. They're the only place I know of to offer a festive breakfast and the result is delicious. It features traditional breakfast items and is given a festive twist by adding homemade stuffing, festive beans, cranberry sauce and Cajun sweet potato chips.

My final Christmas sandwich of the year turned out to be the clear winner and it was to be found at Archer's Butchers in Norwich. This baguette was stuffed full with turkey, onions, bacon, stuffing and cranberry sauce, seriously delicious!

On Christmas Eve my wife and I made a last minute decision to go for breakfast at Olives in Norwich. We'd been here many times throughout 2016, this is one seriously impressive breakfast that just keeps getting better! This was the perfect way to start Christmas and after eating this we didn't need any lunch.

Many thanks for your support in 2016!

Santa's Big Breakfast @ Polo Bar in London

176 Bishopsgate
London
EC2M 4NQ

Open 24 hours

Nearest tube - Liverpool Street

I'd been eating Christmas sandwiches since they first appeared in the shops since mid October. I do love Christmas food and had remembered that you can always rely on Polo Bar in London to create a festive breakfast. In early December they launched their Christmas menu which featured four different festive dishes for under £10 each. I'd tried Santa's Big Breakfast here last year so was delighted to see it return again to their menu. I was visiting London for the weekend and decided I just had to try this great breakfast again.

A jumbo sausage is wrapped in bacon to form a pig in blanket, I thought more bacon was needed to cover the sausage but loved the idea of presenting it this way. The traditional elements of the breakfast are the fried eggs, tomato and toast. These are accompanied by homemade stuffing and Christmas baked beans which are cooked with caramalised onions. The Cajun sweet potato chips are delicious, especially dipped in the cranberry sauce. I loved this breakfast with a festive kick, everything seems to work so well with this combination of items. It's available throughout December so be sure to visit Polo Bar opposite Liverpool Street Station to try it. It's the only festive breakfast I know of out there and don't forget they're open 24 hours.

Huge thanks to Polo Bar and Samphire Communications for inviting me along to try this.

Storm in a Teacup - Norwich

2 Elm Hill
Norwich
NR3 1HN

Breakfast served
Tuesday to Friday - 8am till 5pm
Saturday - 9am till 5pm

Storm in a Teacup has just opened on the corner of Elm Hill and Princes St.

The cafe is fairly small and nicely decorated, the natural light floods in.

The tables beside the window offer a good view out on to Princes Street.

The breakfast menu offers a good selection including the Full English. There isn't currently a vegetarian Full English listed on the menu but the staff were more than happy to create one for my wife.

A selection of books can be found scattered along the window ledge, perfect if you fancy a quick read whilst waiting for your food to arrive.

The cappuccino here cost £2.50, it was served piping hot in a nice big cup. I love getting a biscuit with my coffee, I wish more places did this!

We were offered sauces and requested some ketchup, I was delighted when a bottle of Heinz appeared.

When the food arrived at the table it was nicely presented.

The breakfast included toasted sourdough served with real butter.

The Full English here costs £8.25.

I enjoyed the sausage, bacon and black pudding served on this breakfast. The local meat supplier is P. J. Roofe and Son.

A nice firm pork sausage, delicious!

The eggs tasted great and certainly looked the part.

The yolk was perfect and the toasted sourdough moped it up nicely.

Flavoursome tomatoes and plenty of button mushrooms.

The beans are served in a ramekin, this made it nice and easy for me to pour them precisely where I wanted them, over the toasted sourdough.

My wife chose thyme roasted tomatoes and poached eggs on her vegetarian breakfast. Some vegetarian sausages were found in the kitchen which she was delighted with, it cost just £6.25.

I was walking along Elm Hill a week or so ago when I noticed the premises that used to be the Spanish Cafe had reopened again as another cafe. It was really busy inside and I spotted the name on the window "Storm in a Teacup", an excellent name I thought! The next day I noticed I'd been tagged in a photo on Instagram of a superb looking breakfast made by this new cafe. Initially I thought I'd wait until they'd been open for a few weeks as it seemed unfair to visit so soon after opening. The breakfast photo I'd been tagged in looked so good though I couldn't resist the urge any longer. They were serving breakfast till 3pm and it was just after lunchtime, my wife and I headed inside...

Upon entering - The cafe has big windows offering good views out on to Princes Street and Elm Hill. There's a large table in the centre with some smaller tables around the edge, there's also some stalls by the window if you prefer sitting higher up. The counter displaying an impressive selection of cakes can be found along the back wall. There's full table service here so choose a table and somebody will come over to take your order. Salt and pepper is already on the table, the menu arrives once seated, cutlery and sauces arrive after you've ordered. The atmosphere here was nice and relaxing, it was certainly a great place to enjoy a spot of breakfast. 8/10

Service - The staff here were really friendly and keen to accommodate our needs. Not being familiar with the menu before arriving I had no idea if it offered a vegetarian Full English breakfast or not. It turned out it didn't but every effort was made to provide a vegetarian breakfast that my wife would be happy with. She eventually settled for the Full English minus the meats with thyme roasted tomatoes and poached eggs. Shortly after ordering the chef had remembered some vegetarian sausages in the freezer, my wife was delighted with this and a very fair price for this breakfast was agreed. Hot drinks arrived first, sauces were offered next and finally the food arrived. We paid on the way out feeling very welcomed and well looked after. 9/10

Contents - 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 1 slice of black pudding, 2 eggs, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes and toasted sourdough served with real butter. 8/10

Presentation - This breakfast was presented very neatly in the centre of a large white plate. The beans were served in a ramekin and the toasted sourdough on a side plate with sachets of real butter. Everything looked nicely cooked and those eggs looked very impressive. 9/10

The food - The sausages were a good firm pork variety and the bacon was nicely browned, both tasted excellent and were from local supplier P. J. Roofe and Son. The black pudding was a decent slice with a deep red centre and crispy on the outside. The eggs had plenty of flavour and were cooked just how I like them with no trace of raw white but a nice runny yolk. The sourdough was evenly toasted and tasted great spread with real butter, as always I poured over some beans and topped it with an egg. As I cut through the egg yolk the sourdough soaked it up beautifully. The button mushrooms were delicious and the tomato was full of flavour. An impressive and thoroughly enjoyable breakfast! 9/10

Value for money - The Full English comes with toasted sourdough and costs £8.25. With a cappuccino costing £2.50 my total spend was £10.75. It seemed like a reasonable price to me considering how enjoyable it was and how good the service is here. A hash brown would have made a nice addition to this breakfast but even without one it was still good value for money. 8/10

Veggie option - No vegetarian Full English currently listed on the menu but as we found out, it is possible.

Overall - Considering we visited so soon after they'd opened we were really impressed! Storm in a teacup have launched a great little cafe and are offering an impressive breakfast. Norwich is really spoilt with so many amazing places to go for breakfast and this place is no exception. I look forward to visiting again in the future and wish them good luck with their new venture. Go give them a look, you won't be disappointed! 8.5/10
