Roman Food
The first course at Roman dinner banquets was called either the Gustatio or the Promulsio. It was similar to a modern day appetizer and consisted of salad, eggs, fish, and sweetened wine. The next course was called the Prima Mensa, which in itself had six main dishes. In this course, a variety of meat, fish, and poultry was served.
Savillum - This ancient Roman honey sweetened cheesecake is made with eggs and ricotta cheese and flavored with orange zest, lemon juice, and bay leaves.
This sculpture (actually a hollow cinerary urn) comes from the Banditaccia necropolis, Cerveteri, and is known as the Sarcophagus dei Sposi. It is currently exhibited in the Villa Giulia museum in Rome. The terra cotta sarcophagus lid features figures of a man and woman reclining on a triclinium, or dining couch. Both figures are propped up on their left elbow, with the man close behind the woman.
