ALLUSION 2 PART 2 This is also an allusion to the bible and it is used to show the reader that Patria is a character that needs stability which is why she chose her house to be on a rock in contrast to her much less tame sisters who made their houses on sand
ALLUSION 2 "Build your house upon a rock, He said, do my will. And through the rain fall and the floods come and the winds blow, the good wife's house will stand" (148)
ALLUSION 1 PART 2 This is an allusion to the bible and it is used to show how much Patria loves her son and to parallel the situation of Nelson going to join the revolution and Patria letting him leave to how Jesus left his mother do what God told him to do.
ALLUSION 1 “We knelt there in that hot little rectory and we prayed to the Virgencita. She had clung to Jesus until He told her straight out: ‘Mama–I have to be about my father’s business.’ And she had to let Him go, but it broke her heart because though He was God, he was still her boy” (154).
THEME I think the overall theme of this book was "fight for what you believe in". The three Mirabal sisters fought for what they believed in which was the liberation of the Dominican Republic from Trujillo tyranny. They went against the power of Trujillo knowing that they could be severely punished and in the end they gave their lives for what they believed in and they helped give the people courage to continue the revolution that lead to Trujillo's assassination.
GENERALIZATION 2 I also think that men are generalized in this book by making them all seem dominant and controlling. Trujillo, Jaimito, Pedrito, Papa Mirabal and even Manolo have moments where they clearly want to be the one controlling the situation they are in and especially the women they are close to.
GENERALIZATION 1 Women in this book are generalized by Trujillo assuming that every women in his country is subservient to a man and that every women is a housewife. He treats the women in this book like objects by being a sexual predator and forcing himself on them whenever he thinks they are pretty. He treats women this way because he doesn't respect women or see them as people but just pretty things that can entertain him for a single night.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION 2 PART 2 I will show the struggle for identity in my own writing by creating some type of conflict for the characters to go through that causes them to question their morals and ideals that have been placed upon them by society and by the people around them.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION 2 PART 1 How do authors show a struggle for identity? How will I show that struggle in my own writing? I think authors show a struggle of identity by putting the characters through situations and conflicts that make them question their core values like Julia Alvarez did with Patria's character. By questioning the values and beliefs they grew up with they begin to struggle with who they thought they were and why they were that way.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION 1 PART 4 I think authors develop conflict by having some type of force or person that goes against the main character or in this case characters. It's more obvious in this book because the antagonist is obviously Trujillo and he is the one causing conflict for the sisters and the entire nation.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION 1 PART 3 I think authors develop setting by describing the small details of a place. For example Julia Alvarez describes the churches and houses in the Dominican Republic at the time the sisters would have lived and by doing this the setting becomes much more vivid to the reader.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION 1 PART 2 For example at first it seemed like Patria's character would have never joined the revolution because of her intense religiousness but as she went through more horrific events, such as witnessing the killing of a young boy outside a church, she began to question her core beliefs that lay mostly in God and joined the revolution.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION 1 PART 1 How do author's develop character, setting, and conflict in a story? I think author's develop characters by making them go through events that test their core values and slowly they change their reactions to their situations to the events.

OPINION PART 2 One moment I liked from this book was when Minerva went to Trujillo's party and slapped him when he was touching her and she didn't like it. I know that many women from that time period would have just let him touch them because he is the nations leader and they would be scared of him. Minerva however was not scared and stood up for herself even though she knew that he could punish her in a severe way.
