Plastic Pollution Crisis

Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles in the Earth's environment that adversely affects humans, wildlife and their habitat. Global plastic production began in 1950 and every piece of plastic ever made is still out there. Plastic is made from oil.

Chinese designer turns plastic trash into high fashion to create awareness
Trashion, means "turning trash into fashion" is a new term for art, jewelry, fashion and objects for the home created from used, thrown-out, found and repurposed elements to save our environment. Wan Yunfeng, a Chinese artist and known fashion (Trashion) designer makes head-turning “clothes” from trash that's fit for the best runways around the world; he is trying to create awareness towards environmental issues in a rather unconventional way. Everyone should work to protect the environment.
Microplastics pollution in Antarctica is much worse than previously believed
Studies have increasingly revealed the pervasive presence of microplastics, even in the world’s most remote and pristine locations, including Antarctica. 𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦. The issue with #microplastics lies in their propensity to infiltrate aquatic ecosystems, leading to ingestion by wildlife under the mistaken belief that they are food. This poses a direct threat to marine and freshwater species and carries broader implications for human health and environmental integrity. The origin of these microplastics in the Weddell Sea remains a puzzle. One thing is clear: the enduring presence of microplastics in the Antarctic waters poses significant ecological risks. 🚩⚠️
Is Gum Biodegradable? The Environmental Impact of Chewing Gum
Whatever benefits you gain from chewing gum cannot outweigh the environmental impact of chewing 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 gum. Today's chewing gum is essentially plastic, a product of petroleum, a fossil fuel. 🤢 Gum is the 2nd most common form of litter, topped only by cigarette butts. People spit out this stale sticky treat anywhere on the street or stick it on walls, under tables, and chairs. Plastics are NOT biodegradable; that is, they cannot decompose into organic matter. Instead the plastics breakdown into microscopic particles that end up in the air, water, food, in our bodies. Plastics harms wildlife who think it's food. It could take 100+ yrs to decompose into #microplastics. 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜-𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐮𝐦.
The plastic water bottle industry is booming. Here’s why that’s a huge problem
More than 1 million bottles of water are sold every minute around the world. But the industry’s enormous global success comes at a huge #environmental, #climate + social cost. 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐥 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 for the vast majority of plastics, that have a heavy carbon footprint from manufacturing through to disposal. If the plastics industry were a country, it would be the 5th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Around 85% of plastic water bottles, can take up to 𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 to degrade, end up as waste. They also end up in the ocean, posing a serious threat to marine life. The impacts of groundwater extraction & #plasticpollution from bottled water companies may become worse under a warmer, water-scarce future. A reusable bottle for💧
Plastic water bottle pollution facts
Consider the fact that globally more than a million plastic bottles are SOLD EVERY MINUTE. Plastic bottles can take up to 1,000 years to breakdown, however, most plastics will not biodegrade. Plastic bottles that don’t end up in landfills end up polluting our oceans, killing our environment, injuring & killing marine animals. It’s believed the Great Pacific Garbage patch covers an area of 1.6 million square kilometers. The avg person uses 156 plastic bottles/year. START using reusable bottles.
Dangerous chemicals found in recycled plastics, making them unsafe for use
Plastic pollution is a menace worldwide. #Plastics are now found in every environment on the planet, from the deepest seas to the atmosphere and human bodies. Scientific evidence describing harm to the environment and humans is growing. A study was conducted to identify and measure the concentration of contaminants in #recycled pellets from 28 small-scale recycling facilities in the global south. Plastic waste is often exported from high income countries to less developed countries, with few to no requirements for reporting their makeup. Click link for more on this story.
Microplastics in Antarctic studied in penguin droppings and water 🐧
The amount of #microplastics in the Antarctic is being analyzed by using nuclear science to study the region's waters, sediment + even penguin droppings. Microplastics - particles smaller than 5 millimeters - are a global problem due to large use of plastics. Harmful to life if ingested. It's estimated that since its introduction into the market, 𝟕 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 of plastic have been dumped into the environment, a large part of them in the marine environment. Photo Adélie penguins 🐧
Squeezed by trash, famous turtle undergoes surgery years later 🐢
NOTE: this photo has been seen online many times with no backup story. A Missouri turtle world famous for its terrible encounter with a plastic beverage container ring is on the mend again after undergoing surgery. "Peanut" was discovered in the wild in 1993 with the plastic ring squeezing her shell into the shape of, well, a peanut. She was estimated to be 9 years old when she arrived at the St. Louis Zoo. Peanut is about 38 years old (2022). ALWAYS cut the plastic rings before throwing out. ✂️
Plastics ban will have 'sizable effect' on Canada's ecosystems, expert says
The federal government's regulation bans the manufacturing and import for sale of plastic items. It is phase 1 of a plan to eliminate plastic waste by 2030. Under this timeline, businesses are allowed to sell plastic items, but will need to replace them with compostable or sustainable alternatives. The sale of these items will be prohibited on Dec. 23, 2023. Great protest sign! 😆
Confronting Ocean Plastic Pollution
Unless we act, by 2040 the amount of plastic going into the ocean would triple annually, and the amount in the ocean would nearly quadruple. 95% of plastic packaging is used in one-and-done products. PHOTO: A warehouse full of household materials awaits recycling at a Melbourne, Australia company that has gone bankrupt. The state government and the warehouse owners do not know what to do with the largely unsorted material. This will result in thousands of tons of recyclable waste to landfills.
Ocean pollution and marine debris 🌊
Each year, billions of pounds of trash and other pollutants enter the ocean. Where does this pollution come from? Where does it go? Some of the debris ends up on our beaches, washed in with the waves, tides, and storm surges. Marine debris is a persistent #plasticpollution problem that reaches throughout the entire ocean and Great Lakes. Our ocean and waterways are polluted with a wide variety of marine debris, ranging from tiny microplastics, smaller than 5 mm, to derelict fishing gear and abandoned vessels. Worldwide, hundreds of marine species 🐬🐋🐟 have been negatively impacted by marine debris, which can harm or kill an animal when it is ingested or they become entangled, and can threaten the habitats they depend on. Plastic bag bans have already prevented billions of bags from being used
Industry and government data to suggest that plastic bag bans can eliminate nearly 300 single-use plastic bags per person per year. “People realize quickly it’s easy to live without #plastic bags and get used to bringing a bag from home or skipping a bag when they can.” The case against plastic bags is simple. They cause pollution at every stage of their lifespan, starting with the extraction of the oil & gas that’s used to make them. They cannot be recycled; after being used just once — they are either incinerated or sent to a landfill, where they can last for hundreds of years. Notoriously, bags can also become litter that pollutes the natural environment and kills wildlife. They can also shed tiny fragments called microplastics can cause many health problems in humans. #plasticpollution
The essential guide to plastic pollution
The world is drowning in plastics and it's a fossil fuel-driven dilemma. Plastic pollution is a nightmare for the #climate, ecosystems, agriculture, human health, and the oceans. All of our plastic wrap, bottles, bags, tools, toys, etc. ends up generating hundreds of millions of metric tons of #plastic waste every year. This problem is set to triple to one billion metric tons by 2060. Worldwide, very little ends up being recycled. Plastic can take anywhere from 10 to 500 years to decompose. 💥
Plastic pollution is an urgent global crisis
Tiny pieces of plastic have been found everywhere around the world, from the highest mountain peaks to the deepest ocean trenches. Plastic is found in the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the soil below us, and even inside of our bodies. Plastic pollution is a human health, social justice, environmental, climate, and wildlife issue. ⚠️ 99% of all plastics are made from petrochemicals derived from fossil fuels—gas, oil, and coal—and drive the #climatecrisis. #globalwarming
