5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy for the General Public
This was a concise yet profound synopsis of a challenging philosophy text. I felt it expounded the main areas of The Republic very clearly and hinted at its weaknesses. Perhaps Ladybird could publish on other key texts in a similar way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem!
The new Ladybird Expert series has provided some great material, but Ms. Hobbs exploration of Plato's masterpiece is beyond excellent. Why cannot all philosophers write in plain English like this author so that the rest of us can understand why the writings of the great thinkers of the past are still important?

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential
It's The Republic, simple as that. I wouldn't want to live there but it is the first big starement of Western Philosophy - like it or not, it's immense.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent short guide to Plato's 'Republic'
Although the subject is covered quite concisely, the explanations are very clear. The accompanying graphic illustrations are vivid and appropriate. An enjoyable, and highly recommended, overview of the 'Republic'.
