Race is often ignored as a core component of social and emotional competency (SEC) and social and... more Race is often ignored as a core component of social and emotional competency (SEC) and social and emotional learning (SEL). This study explored preservice school social worker and elementary teacher interns’ participation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary SEL training curriculum that integrates race. Nine preservice trainees (majority White women) participated in the collaborative training. Qualitative methodology was utilized to examine and access the training. Content analysis revealed three themes from a study of the interns’ participation in the training: function of color blindness, “I haven’t noticed,” and silencing of emotions. While interns acknowledged the importance of race, they were unclear on how students’ racial identities were a key component of students’ SEC. They also struggled to find ways to incorporate race in their implementation of SEL. Findings are discussed regarding the role of race and preservice training in SEL.

Consequently, effective remote symptom management support is essential to optimize self-management and resource use, including emergency department visits and hospitalizations (ED+H) during chemo. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility, acceptability and effects of a telephone management intervention on symptomatic toxicity and resource use during chemo for early stage breast cancer (EBC). Methods: A prospective study of telephone-based toxicity management among women receiving neo-adjuvant or adjuvant chemo for EBC was undertaken at one urban and one rural site in Ontario, Canada. New, minimally-invasive ablation technologies such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) offer treatment options for patients with a variety of cancers. These emerging therapies can improve patient care (minimize side-effects, offer more rapid recovery with comparable or enhanced outcomes) compared to traditional approaches. However, they are often resource intensive, necessitating a planned system-level approach to ensure appropriate access to high quality services while optimizing care and resource utilization. This chapter is as a visual guide for launching a critical service learning (CSL) project with th... more This chapter is as a visual guide for launching a critical service learning (CSL) project with the goal of providing step- by- step implementation instructions. The implementation process may be different, depending on the setting, target population, and level of cognitive ability of the youth. The chapter is divided into five phases: (a) preplanning and screening, (b) skill building, (c) planning, (d) implementing/ action, and (e) evaluating. The content is structured to accommodate 12 group sessions. Each phase provides suggested materials, preparation tips, anticipated outcomes, and a content focus. In addition, two case examples are included, depicting a CSL project in an elementary school and one in a high school. Materials will be determined based on the focus and the marketing and recruitment needs of the project. Possible material may include marketing flyers and referral forms. Other notifications (parent) depend on school policies.

Bickman saw the logic model as a presentation of how the program will work to solve identified problems under certain conditions. Basically, a logic model shows a graphic depiction of a program, its goals, and underlying assumptions and a plan of action and outcomes. This model is helpful for the school- based practitioner to clearly articulate critical service learning (CSL) goals to school administrators. The traditional teaching of reading, writing, and arithmetic alone will not fully prepare student... more The traditional teaching of reading, writing, and arithmetic alone will not fully prepare students to lead with integrity, govern fairly, analyze problems, and work collectively with people different from themselves. Social emotional learning (SEL) has been described as one of the missing links in academic education, but a restrictive approach to SEL instruction focuses primarily on emotional and behavioral containment rather than development of active citizenry. Out-of-school programs that provide opportunities for youths to conduct community service learning projects, however, can be a valued resource for supporting critical social emotional learning and social political development. The Chicago Freedom School (CFS) is one such program. This article features the voices of youths’ ages 14–16 who participated in CFS during the 2008–2009 Freedom Fellowship, using content analysis. It also discusses future implications for school mental health professionals and SEL instruction.
