Robb Flynn's Gear
Usage
Robb used this as his one of his main guitars from 2007-2013. It can be seen frequently live during that time and in the videos for Now I lay thee down and Halo.
In this video, Robb Flynn discusses his signature model Flying V guitar made by Epiphone. He says, "…its taken a beating, its held up ***** awesome. It's a big solid hunk of mahogany, its got a 27 inch scale baritone neck, its got EMG-81s for super crunchy metal tone and right now its got an EMG HA in it, which is a single coil for like Hendrix-y, Ritchie Blackmore kind of a sound which I really love that type of a sound especially for clean tones and for some type of leads…"
According to a Peavey article from April 2012 celebrating 20 years of the 6505 amp, Robb Flynn is a longtime user of it:
"Machine Head’s Robb Flynn has used the amp since the recording sessions for his band’s debut, Burn My Eyes, in the early ‘90s. “We were trying to get a modern, heavy tone,” he said. “And when we came across [the 6505], it was crushing. It’s got a really incredible midrange growl that works so well.”"
“I’m a tone freak, and these strings are without question, the heaviest sounding strings I’ve played.” – Robb Flynn
In this image, one can see Robb Flynn using a red Warlock Acrylic Warrior guitar.
In the article note the question that asks how robb got his high gainy sound on the "Unto the Locusts" record. He mentions his 5150 amp goes into a Marshall cabinet. And on the DVD for the making of the record, he is seen micing his 1960b cabinet.
He says what he used on the Unto The Locusts record in one of the questions and it was a 5150 amp head. You can also see this set up on the making of dvd.
This is a custom ESP Flying V made for Robb by the company. It's got a black finished, white pick guard, mahogany body, baritone scale neck (27" I believe), 24 fret rosewood fretboard with dot and Machine Head diamond inlays, black hardware, and an EMG81 in the bridge and EMG HA in the neck. This guitar was used heavily from 2002 - 2007, starting with the end of "The Burning Red" era, until the early "The Blackening" era until he switched back to Gibson in 2008.
Robb is seen using a Jackson Soloist during this Dynamo 1995 gig, specifically for the songs tuned to C# Standard. It is heavily stickered, and is HSS. One of the few guitars used by Robb that had a Floyd Rose on it.
In this Instagram photo, Robb Flynn gives praise to the Epiphone Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom-7 guitar: "Morning Riffin'. Just channeled some new album inspiration from the Matt Heafy 7-string. Good stuff, great axe!"
Robb Flynn posts an Instagram photo of him holding a Rockett Pedals 10 Ton Hammer pedal (photo from October 2012).
This guitar was used extensively during the "The More Things Change" touring cycle, and is seen in a couple music videos as well (it was an interesting time for Machine Head).
Robb tweeted: "Getting ready for "An Evening With", dug out the clear-blood-red BC Rich and the 1997 Gibson SG from TMTC tour," which is the source of the pic.
FLYNN: The Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress [flanger], which is a big old hunking, 9-inch-wide pedal. It's one of the stomp boxes that I use religiously on every album. I use that thing so much, I can't even tell you. It's one of the best pedals ever invented. Listen to the opening riff of "Imperium" [from 2003's Through the Ashes of Empires]; that effect is on both the clean part and the heavy part.
You can basically hear it in any clean tone on any of our records, like at the beginning of "Aesthetics of Hate" [on 2007's The Blackening]. The way that it flanges is unlike any other flange I've found. It's got this watery, glassy tone to it that makes almost anything sound better. I've actually gotta be careful I don't overuse it, because I like it so much.
At 7:45 in the video, Robb is showing off his ESP baritone which he recorded most of the album with.
Robb Flynn is seen playing a Gibson explorer in this video. This was his main guitar during the "Burn My Eyes" era, and is seen in numerous music videos and live performances.
Given to Flynn personally by Dimebag Derrel. It was stolen but got returned.
robb and phil are both shown to use these amplifiers during live shows with a peavey 6505 style preset
Robb Flynn of Machine Head is associated with the Peavey 6505+ 120-Watt Tube Guitar Amp Head, as noted on Peavey.com.
at 7:05 in this documentary of the making of The Blackening, Robb is seen calling a local guitar center to buy Marshall 1960BV cabs because the ones they were using blew up.
at around 6:50 you can see that he has the deluxe electric mistress in the back of his effects tray
At 7:05 Robb says he uses the Hendrix fuzz. You can clearly see that it is this red version.
You can see it at 7:10. You can tell from the colour that it is the small clone chorus not the phaser
very clearly visible on the left of the pedal drawer at 6:48
There are two of these on the upper pedal drawer. one is marked '#1' and the other is '#2'
it is the leftmost pedal on the upper pedal drawer. Seen at 6:47
I got this wrong, this is actually a Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, someone delete this please.
In 01:01 you can see him using this acoustic guitar .
You can see it in his pedal drawer at 7:03
You can see it in his pedal drawer at 6:46. Judging by colour, it would most likely be Boss CH-1 Super Chorus.
