Abstract

Technological developments and safety on the roads, and on the railways, have followed paths that have both similarities and differences. We looked back at the history of these developments and examined how railway accident investigation impacted technology and safety. By focusing on a small number of relevant rail accidents we were able to identify specific lessons for autonomous vehicle technology, yielding a structured set of recommendations.
