Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ذل (ẕüll, “submissiveness, degradation, weakness, a low estate, abjectness”),^[1][2] from Arabic ذُلّ (ḏull, “lowness, baseness, vileness, abjectness”), verbal noun of ذَلَّ (ḏalla, “to be low, to be humble”).^[3]
