Welsh
editAlternative forms
editEtymology
editFrom hwn (“this”) + yna (“there”). Compare honna and hynna.
Pronunciation
editPronoun
edithwnna m
- (informal) that
- Synonym: hwnnw
- Pwy yw hwnna? ― Who's that (guy)?
- Ti'n deall 'na? ― Do you understand that?
Usage notes
edit- Refers to grammatically masculine nouns, honna being the feminine equivalent. In addition, hynny (or hynna colloquially in the north) is used nonreferentially, for example, when talking about a general situation, action or event, rather than any particular noun.
- May be reduced to 'na in colloquial language, whereas in formal language, hwnnw is preferred with the same meaning.
